OSNews, Generic OSes Yeah, I might be just re-inventing the wheel here, who knows? But I had this (original? I doubt it) idea a few months ago and I was meant to write about it for some time now. So, my idea is about creating a new operating system that is like none of the current ones. It would be so different, that porting applications from other "traditional" systems wouldn't be possible. But the gains would be much more important of what we would lose by implementing a brand new new system.

The docucentric approach
by Michael A. Clem on Wed 6th Nov 2002 01:11 UTC

Very interesting idea, but like some of the others, I can't see why this couldn't be implemented on top of an existing OS or kernel, especially one like OpenBeOS.
Conversely, creating a new OS from scratch means trying to figure out how, if at all, the docucentric approach actually affects the kernel, drivers, and the like.
Still, if anybody wants to do this, I'd certainly like to follow it. Once the basic groundwork and structure is figured out, "building" the OS with the modules should be relatively simple.
