OSNews, Generic OSes Yeah, I might be just re-inventing the wheel here, who knows? But I had this (original? I doubt it) idea a few months ago and I was meant to write about it for some time now. So, my idea is about creating a new operating system that is like none of the current ones. It would be so different, that porting applications from other "traditional" systems wouldn't be possible. But the gains would be much more important of what we would lose by implementing a brand new new system.

another "con"

As a Windows user trying to "defect" to Linux, I have one specific complaint: While a major feature of open-source operating systems is a lack of bloat, this lack of bloat results in a myriad of little applets, all of which are developed by various members of the Linux community.

There are competing applets, applets that require specific libraries, applets that only work with particular other applets, applets with cute little names that mean something only to their developers, and so on.

We need to follow the KISS rule here. If your little idea is to have any hope of success, there needs to be a specific list of applets developed by specific groups and updated by a specific timetable. Otherwise, you end up with the same newbie confusion and return to Microsoft that happens practically every day.
