OSNews, Generic OSes Yeah, I might be just re-inventing the wheel here, who knows? But I had this (original? I doubt it) idea a few months ago and I was meant to write about it for some time now. So, my idea is about creating a new operating system that is like none of the current ones. It would be so different, that porting applications from other "traditional" systems wouldn't be possible. But the gains would be much more important of what we would lose by implementing a brand new new system.

Assumptions?

It seems, to me anyway, that a mime-type-centric interface only works if you assume interelated documents are of the same type. I'm not sure this is always the case. For example, if I have a document I'm creating that has pictures, text, and graphs/tables, I'll have to constantly flip between three different types. In the end, I'd run into the same problem I have in current environments, where I have to have Excel, Word, and Photoshop all running next to each other, trying to make each one work with one another.

I'm not dismissing the idea at all, but I just think it might be a good idea to remember that integration between modules would be important (and likely challenging) to implement.
