OSNews, Generic OSes Yeah, I might be just re-inventing the wheel here, who knows? But I had this (original? I doubt it) idea a few months ago and I was meant to write about it for some time now. So, my idea is about creating a new operating system that is like none of the current ones. It would be so different, that porting applications from other "traditional" systems wouldn't be possible. But the gains would be much more important of what we would lose by implementing a brand new new system.

Would not be practical

The mimetype idea is cool and would be a great addition to current oses, not too ahrd to implement either, however the module idea I am not so sure of.

What will tehy do? Right clicka mimetype and wait for a 100 module lsit to show up? Why not just open witha default application like normal oses do, it would include all fo these modules and make it easier to be productive ebcause you would have everything at hand. Maybe advanced and novice buttons would help the new user and meet the power-user's needs. This really seems like something even more confusing and unfriendly.

Again though, the first idea, I think would be awesome if it was implemented in KDE or GNOME for example.

I don't think the rest would happen even if it was possible and could be a little uer-friendly. It would never be able toa chieve wide acceptance, hardware recognition fast enough to gain the support it needs from big names liek Adobe or Macromedia. The applications would be medicore at best and would not be able to suit the power-user. It would take too much work re-inventing already existing technologies and would always eb playing catch-upw ith otehr oses, it would be nothing more than a hobbyst os.

I also beleive that oses like OS X jaguar and WInXp are already pretty friendly and don't need to be modular. Your grandma needs to learn the world of computers sometime!
