MandrakeSoft today announced the release of Mandrake Linux 9.0 for Opteron processors based on AMD 64-bit technology. This version of Mandrake Linux 9.0 for Opteron processors has been made available to MandrakeSoft’s partners and is also available on several public FTP mirrors. This development will lead to a planned release in April 2003 of the ‘Mandrake Linux Corporate Server 2.1’ for AMD Opteron, a product dedicated to server deployment in medium to large accounts. Later in June 2003, MandrakeSoft will release ‘MandrakeClustering’ for Opteron, an easy-to-use clustering solution.

Are the Opetrons even out yet? I thought they weren’t. In any case, it’s good that Mandrake jumped in early in the game…perhaps getting themselves entrenched right off the bat will help them in the long run. Their business model should be more or less fixed by now (not perfect, but they’ve long-since rid themselves of those who ran them so far into the red), and a jump on the 64-bit Linux server market should do wonders for them…I hope.
Does anyone have an Opteron to test this on? Is it any faster?
will this run on bochs’s 64 bit emulation?
or is it still way too early in development to run anything productive?
obviously wouldnt tell you anything about 64 bit performance but could be good early adopter’s “development setup” till the hardware becomes available
I for one can’t wait till I get my hands a the Athlon 64, but they are not supposed to come out till the 3rd quarter of the year. So I guess I’ll be waiting a few more months. The Opteron on the other hand, I think comes out soon. :

I think programmers will love the FLAT memory of the
HAmmers this is why Linus whant a 64 bits machine . With
Xeons you have to do tricks like in the pre 386 days (Remember dos and extended memory and all the rest) to run programs on
larger than 4G chunks of memory .
I want a Hammer and i want it now
Can anyone give a summary of why AMD’s 64-bit CPU is better than a 64-bit CPU from Sun? I don’t know that much these things, so would be interested to head what people have to say. Databases is the only application I can see that this will give any improvement over 32-bit. I think there’s a design flaw in any web server or game that requires to address more than 4GB of RAM.
