Early Version of MontaVista Pro Edition Based on 2.6 Linux Kernel

MontaVista Software has announced the immediate availability of an early access version of MontaVista Linux Professional Edition (Pro), based on the latest 2.6 Linux kernel.This evaluation release provides customers with the opportunity to try out the new 2.6 kernel with existing applications originally developed for the current release of Pro 3.1 based on the 2.4.20 kernel. It is available to all current subscribers of MontaVista Linux, and can be downloaded from the MontaVista Zone of the company’s Web site at www.mvista.com/support/

“MontaVista Linux is already a standard on many solutions ranging from the data center to the device,” said Peder Ulander, vice president of marketing for MontaVista. “This update integrates many of the latest Open Source components, and is designed for increased application performance, improved memory management, tighter security, and increased system flexibility.”

With this new version of Pro, MontaVista offers customers many of the advanced features of Linux kernel 2.6, while providing them with the tested stability of its existing quality product subscriptions.

New features include:

o High Resolution Timers
o KGDB (kernel debugger) Support
o Interrupt Latency Measurement
o Linux Trace Toolkit
o Configurable System V Semaphores
o Cross-Development Build Enhancements

This updated version of the software is based on MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 3.1, and is built on the 2.6.6 Linux kernel. It works with a variety of x86 platforms, such as the generic x86-586, IA32- Pentium II and IA32 – Pentium III.

The new Pro update allows MontaVista customers to continue the development work they have begun on the 2.4.20 kernel and provides them with a complete environment to test their applications on the new kernel. The early access version is designed for use with both Windows and Linux-hosted cross- development tools.
