This did catch me off gaurd. I think that the conference attendece is also affected by 2 major linux conferences in the US every year. It is a shame that the associations that run these things don't work together.

Just wondering if its a collection of the old Battle Axe Unix bigots(greasy hair, long unkempt beard) parading around like they invented Unix. Those people annoy me to no end and they prove useless in modern IT business.

Does not live in Europe

For all I know, Usenix never really lived in Europe, so a lot of the European people in the open source world are not really convinced to go to the USA to attend those meetings. That plus the fact the USA is being overly anal with regard to the information gathering on the plane ride, which many of us in Europe boycot.

Scandinavians and USENIX

Quote: "In fact, there were quite a few Scandinavians at the conference. I don't know why - is USENIX well-advertised over there?"

In Norway you get a USENIX membership if you are a member of NUUG (Norwegian UNIX User Group). Thus we (NUUG members) read about the conferences in ;login:. Don't know about the other Scandinavian countries though.
