There was a gal from Sun that did an interview a couple years ago (it was featured here I believe) where she talked about the next leap in programming should be basically fault-tolerant programming where everything doesn't have to be exact as it is now. Of course (IMO), this is going to take some kind of AI to go into compilers or whatever, but it was an interesting take.
