These days, engineers at Sun Microsystems have their counterparts at chipmaker AMD on speed dial. Sun, whose turnaround plan bets heavily AMD Opteron-based processor servers, has gained the ear of the chipmaker over the last two years and thus is helping shape the future of the Opteron, which charged on the scene in early 2003 as a competitor to Intel’s Xeon.
AMD has been doing so much progress lately, I’m glad Sun finally saw the light (no pun intended lol). Sun’s been making lots of deals with many people…. I wonder what they’re up to………

I have a v40z here at work, and it works great with CentOS or RHEL. However if you try to run on Fedora, any sort of newer custom kernel (2.6.12 or up) or even SuSE (a supported product) be prepared for major pain.
Not only that, but the documentation doesn’t match reality. Try doing console redirection on any of the Sun Opterons. It requires a secret squirrel jumper being removed that the documentation says is required for console redirection.
I cannot get Fedora to even Boot on my AMD64. However I am able to get SuSE 9.3/FreeBSD/Solaris 10 and Windows 2K3 working perfectly.
I have issues with FC4 on several machines that boot Ubuntu or SuSE or Mandrake just fine. I don’t know why peopel swear by Fedora. What bugs me about most about Fedora is that the update system keeps complaining about GPG signatures.

is either install the gpg keys or set the
gpgcheck to “0” in all the /etc/yum.repos.d/*.repo
files

Read that AMD has been working on their next gen architecture for over a year now….and anandtech has a roadmap out based on an interview from an AMD head. So things are gonna be awesome if the current gen AMD procs are any indication.
Really good news that AMD is close with Sun. Sun has some of the best ideas and tech whether it comes from software or hardware. Great stuff.

By the same contraction, HP, Dell all ‘bought their way’
to the PC market.
If we are talking X86/X64 based servers and workstations
then I think the Galaxy class servers (x4XXX range) are
pretty innovative.
Actually, Sun was in talks to buy AMD a few years ago.. I cant remember if this was public or not.. Anyway, they decided for strategic reasons that instead they would work closely together to develop a new CPU. A few years after that alliance, the Operton shows up. Sun was involved with the Opeteron from the beginning.
I’m guessing that Sun and AMD knew that if the Opeteron was released as a Sun x86 chip, it would have been very hard to get IBM, HP, Dell, etc. to use it. So the alliance (as opposed to a merger/buyout) was a far better plan. However, I could still see at some point in the future, the combination of AMD and Sun.
Sun is making some really tactical moves. If you’ve been counting Sun out of the game, I’d reconsider and keep a closer eye on them….
