X-Fi: agree. However, he recommends the Platinum, I recommend the XtremeMusic. Cheaper, same specs but without the dandy input-panel that adds two MIDI ports and a remote (I ended up losing the remote).

Rebel: definitely an excellent camera, but isn't it a bit of a niche recommendation? "For you semi-pro-but-not-pro-enough-to-buy-a-really-REALLY-good-camera photographers out there..." All seven of us.

ATI xSomethingorother: hell no. For $200 less you take a performance loss of (no joke, Google benchmarks) ~10fps with the x850s, which are coming down in price. A driver update could get me that kind of gain. And he's been 100% sucked into Creative's X-Fi hype. It's not a bad card from an audio quality viewpoint - a hell of a lot better than the Audigy 2 - but because it includes decent quality parts and doesn't resample everything to 48KHz like the Audigy 2 did, not because the Crystalizer is worth anything at all. If you need a good multichannel / gaming card, buy an X-Fi and don't use the crappy flashy features, just play everything at the sampling rate it was recorded. If you want a REALLY high quality stereo card and don't need gaming features, get an E-Mu 0404 or 1212m, also from Creative.

(I got a good laugh out of the idea those dime store Logitech speakers are anywhere near capable of providing any noticeable benefit from having a 24/96 input as opposed to 16/44. heh.) Not only are the suggestions just another excuse to indulge an existing habit, they limit the opportunity for someone to develop in more interesting and beneficial ways. There should, at least, be a sizable percentage of small, low-cost, or culturally stimulating suggestions. As it stands, the majority just play up to dumb consumerism.
