What's the name of the OS that you wrote with the polished user interface? You know, the one with perfect driver support that never crashes and can run every program in existance?
--
Now to get back on topic, I applaud anyone who even attempts to write an operating system, it's not exactly a trivial thing to do. Don't let the trolls bother you, Visopsys is already past the stage that most hobby OSes ever get to.

Driver Support: For the most part, Windows and OSX.

Linux: Fun to play with, makes a great web server or cheap firewall.

i dont believe some people on this site. Your all mocking this OS, sure the name not exactly the best in the world and yes the GUI makes XP looking amazing. But come on! This is OSNEWS site please dont diss an OS because it doesnt say Linux on the side. I agreed with an above poster that writting an OS is not a days work. It takes at least a good 10 years to make something interesting to use. Let alone the extra years for graphics and drivers. Cant believe some people here are just mocking this OS it is really sad behavior. I congrat people who do write an OS even for a hobby it something most of us couldnt even do.

Have you actually read what this guy is doing? This project includes GUI in the kernel! sounds fantastic and what I think to be expected for a modern OS.
I am longing for an OS that is snappy and reliable like BeOS once was 5 years ago. Boot times matter. I see no reason that any flavor of Win or Linux should take a minute to boot to gui on modern hardware (1ghz, 512mb ram, 64mb graphic card) and be sluggish after that waiting is a pain. Note: "modern hardware" is not the same as "4.2ghz 2gb ram with 256mb T&L graphic card gamer PC".

Assuming you're saying what I think you're saying, doesn't that mean that having a program that uses a GUI crash also increase the odds of the kernel crashing?

I remember reading in the KDE docs once that some things are run with a client/server interfaces so if for example a kicker applet locks up, kicker itself is still fine. I'm assuming that with the code directly tied together the stability of one will also be directly influenced by the stability of the other.

UI Improvements

The default UI could use some asthetic changes imo, the rectangular widgets themselves are ok, but the borders are kind of big.

Although at this stage in it's development I wouldn't be too surprised to find out that the way the widgets look isn't as important as Kernel and API development.

@trolls: You consider it crap? Fine, leave it alone then and don't you besmirch a cool lads work with your foul utterings, thanks but so very much! Blah. boil in your own sap, will you?

@Andy: Hell and damnation, this is a fine piece of work you've achieved here! Dynamic linking and sorta. Cool, honestly. The interface looks tidied up. The icons are a bit big, but that's ok with me wearing glasses and having slight difficulties recognizing small icons (bigger ones are always better)

The system looks and feels lean and snappy despite the occasional crashes & lockups due to experimental code which isn't yet cleaned out/fixed. It says PREVIEW, so that's to be counted with, eh?

I'm eager to try out the networking stuff as soon as possible. ;-) Nice to see that other OsDevers are also incorporating TcpIp in their work.

Stay safe!

The real problem with "holding people accountable" in this context, is that that's the most certain way you can come up with to create a club of mutual admiration where groupthink gets modded up and insightful comments that are diverging from it are modded into oblivion, their authors subjected to namecalling and continuing down-modding because of it. This is the line of thought that almost got Gallileo burned at the stake, had he not "repented". Further, random user "Sir Postalot" may get an irrelevant amount of credibility if they post a lot of stuff conforming to the groupthink. Anyone who finds this scenario desireable? I don't.

Sorry for being totally of topic, but the madness with this "registed accounts only" that keeps popping up has to be pointed out.

:)

Especially thanks to whomever put up those screenshots. I spend so much time and energy on functionality that docs and web pages and screenshots sometimes suffer.

Also, thanks to those who posted constructive criticisms. Sounds like I have to make it look flashier.

(Makes ya laugh though, you spend 8 years making a whole OS from scratch and people complain about the appearance of the icons or whatever... But it's clear that appearance does matter to people)
