Mandriva subsidiary Edge-IT has been selected to participate in an EU-backed project that aims to create a next-generation computing approach known as the ‘Social Semantic Desktop’. The goal is to transform the PC into a collaborative environment that supports both personal computing and information sharing via social and organizational channels.
The first thing I would do if I were on the project is integrate all the existing solutions into one whole, standardised framework.
And finally implement attribute(flexible meta-data)-handling capabilities into the Linux kernel.
Mandrake lost track and the No. 1 position on distrowatch in 2005. I have heard about so many Mdk users migrating to gentoo/ Kubuntu, myself I migrated to gentoo and then to Arch. The release of Mandriva Limited edition in 2005 added to more users migrating out.
Good news started coming with the acquisition of the Lycoris Desktop/LX distribution. This was followed by the release of its Multi Network Firewall (MNF), version 2.
The release of Version 2006 was a landmark release which pleased almost all my Mandriva friends. So good was the release that in Review the author at Madpenguin wrote
“It’s dead easy to install, a breeze to use and configure, has enough applications included to keep even the most die-hards happy, and it’s got overwhelming support from the company and community at large.”
All my friends who stuck to Mandrake were now laughing at the ones who quit Mandrake. I saw a large number of people in our LUG slowly returning to Mandrake.
Now with this ‘Social Semantic Desktop’, Mandriva can only grow further and scale heights. Way to go Mandriva.
I would bet that Suse would have been chosen for this rather then Mandriva if Novell hadn’t bought them. Too bad with Suse it would have had a chance to be implemented properly.

Mandrake as beaten Red Hat in sale in the US before there IPO , its also the main factor why SUSE is bankrupt and a portfolio at Novell , Mandriva competed and won against them , all the time.

Why else would they chose a company that just came out of bankruptcy and is still trying to get it together especially when there are Linux companies much better equipped to develop this type of solution most notably RedHat and Suse. The reality is that SUSE dont exist anymore its a portfolio of novell , Novell whas a contender but whas rejected for some reasons , probably cost and no real community. Red Hat dont have a desktop solution for everyone so they are out.

okay firstly, Mandriva is awesome.
It is the first distro I have ever seen work completely on a 64 bit machine. well there are a few problems but its linux you get what you pay for you know what I mean?

Case and point, Ubuntu in my opinion is physically impaired and infact totally useless for any power user. besides the fact that ninety-nine percent of it didnt even work at all on my 64bit machine.
On the other hand I have met many a person who is very happy with their ubuntu. they got everything to work, and its no problem for them. so I dont worry about it, most people I have met hate DSL or Mandriva, but those are my top two choices. give em a little room.

sounds like I’ve just been ripped off or just too slow. I’ve been working on something exactly like this for a film/VFX studio.
everything is interconnected so that If I parent emacs to konquerer I get all the same info in both windows but just different format. The source code of webpages spits out in one, the page in another. It’ll also organize all the files by the properties of the actual file instead of its tag. In music for example, everything is organized by beat count and tonal qualities, thus seperating the Maralyn Manson, form the Death cab for cutie. It’s even set beyond genre down to the artist, but the tags are used to keep the program from putting a song in the wrong place.
I’m not really finished yet, I dont have a full package list and its not all compilable yet. so no distro watch till then.
