Linux is getting better and better, Open Solaris is gaining community. Both of them will most likely run on HP hardware regardless of what HP does or says.

As an OS customer I would feel a lot safer with an OS that is supported by multiple entities than something that is the child of one vender.

HP is likely to find that their HP-UX userbase is going to be dilluted, and the cost of supporting this userbase is going up.

One would think that the Unix business had learned something from the Unix wars, but evidently not. I'm not trying to start another HP-UX vs Solaris flamewar and hope this doesn't turn into that again. However, it's not surprising that HP said no when Sun did *yet another* publicity stunt.

In case you guys don't know, Blizzard Entertainment is switching the majority of the World Of Warcraft servers from Linux (Redhat 2.1 Advanced Server) to HP-UX. Why you ask? Because they were having stability problems with RHEL 2.1 that don't happen with HP-UX. Now granted, they are idiots for not using something 2.6 kernel based like RHEL3 or even RHEL4. But the fact is still that they are migrating to HP-UX and not Solaris. I know one of the Oracle DBAs that work for them.

Also please note that I am a complete Linux zealot, I just don't like flaming where it is unnecessary because the flamers are mis-informed. Babe, SUN sold the most machines in the mid to low end, and IBM has taken the crown in the high end - sorry, the UNIX market has been slimmed down to two players, IBM vs. SUN; quite frankly, due to Florina's incompetancy, she was the one who killed HP's chances of getting a share of the UNIX pie - her approach of 'f*ck all R&D, heaps of hype, cut prices and try to be another Dell!' - yeah, great stratergy, selling low cost computers without enough margins to help spur R&D to differentiate products from what Dell offers.

Go into any data centre today, and you'll see wall to wall SUN and IBM machines - where are the HPs? they killed off their chances when they killed off the only real performance king to POWER - Alpha, and even PA-RISC wasn't a bad beat either.

So please, stop sucking down the cool aid, because I can assure you, in 10 years time, HP will be a small printer company - assuming Dell hasn't gotten its ass into gear and pummeled the prices out of profitablility for HP, and a small services wing, the rest, it'll be killed off by a combination of Red Hat, SUN, IBM and with the remain scraps being fought over by some small players.
