I almost bought a PowerMac recently because I like OS X so much. (I need to run dual monitors, so their other systems are not an option).

However, after thinking about it for awhile, once again, I passed. When you look at what you are getting for $1,999, it's not very impressive. For $1,999 they are only giving you 512 Mb of RAM, a 128 Mb video card, and a 160 Gb hard disk. For that kind of money, you can do a hell of a lot better with a dual core Athlon 64. You could easily quadruple the RAM, double the video memory, and double the hard disk space, and still have money left over.

It's really sad to see Apple running the Mac into the ground. But unfortunately, that's what they are doing. Sure, people would pirate it, but people are pirating the hacked version now anyway, they may as well release it for the honest people out there as well!

If you think about it, that's how Windows got so big, it was pretty much the only choice for a very long time, especially since Microsoft wedged it's way into the OEM market. I can bet that Dell would distribute Mac OS X based systems in a heartbeat. This would gather more developers and with more software being developed, would gather more users.

Of course it'd more or less kill their hardware sales, but from what I understand right now they make more money on their iPods than they do on selling their Computers.

Just some thoughts. A very happy birthday to them! Though I always prefered the Atari and Amiga computers...

I'm comparing to a system I could build myself, or have someone build for me. Such a system would leave the $1,999 PowerMac in the dust.

It's close, but Macintosh sales still outshine iPod sales; $6.275b in net Macintosh sales, $4.540b in net iPod sales in FY2005. This doesn't tell the entire story, of course, but even grouping the other categories as appropriate, Macintosh is still in the #1 spot.
