I believe this is... how should I put it...?

But Wimbledon in Pong-like ascii-version? Oh yeah

BTW: Due to the addictive element in Pong you should probably add a disclaimer to the summary. Like this: "I also look forward to the Wimbledon version that resembles Pong. - BEWARE: Pong is highly addictive.
Actually I think this is quite interesting. Back in the early days of computers and networked communication something like this could have been pretty handy, it's not very detailed, but at least people can get some idea of how the game is going.

But then, I'd be the kind of person to get together with friends and recreate the early days of networked computing, much like some history buffs like to reinact famous wars.

Not to be a dick but it's time for a reality check. According to wikipedia, modern SOCCER came around 1863. Footbal (the real kind, not guys in shorts) around 1869. That's six years difference, hardly "well before". Going by popularity alone, I think the rugby ripoff won easily. Just so you are aware, it's not called football only in America. I believe the F in CFL stands for football, although I could be wrong. Even the euros know what real football is; NFL Europe ain't skinny guys in shorts tearing off their shirts.

In the rest of the world football == soccer.

In Denmark the word is "fodbold".

If we're talking about american football (aka perverted rugby), the word we use is "amerikansk football". Because your football isn't football.

According to Wikipedia soccer is known as football outside the US, and the US is only one nation of hundreds.

Besides that football did exist long before 1863. 1863 is the year of the official beginning. Football as a game have existed for several centuries (the same goes for hockey). Spelling and rules have changed through the years, and keeps changing, but the fact is that football as we know it (outside USA) is centuries old.

Check your "facts".

"SOCCER" was derived from "Association Football", which was shortened to Assoc. in common use and derived into "Soccer". So:
1st. Football
2nd. Association Football
3rd. Assoc.
4th. Soccer

Going by popularity alone, I think the rugby ripoff won easily.
In the USA, sure. Elsewhere, are you kidding?

"Going by popularity alone, I think the rugby ripoff won easily. "

I can't agree that football is centuries old. Football (not the american one) stemmed from the sport similar to rugby (played with both feet and hands).
It was invented in England in second half of the 19th century and soon popularized in south america by some Englishmen. The sport soon evolved to foot-only.

Of course americans hijacked the word and declared their own rugby-ripoff a football (name probably inspired by the same predecessor of "euro"-football or by the fact that free kicks are shot with a foot)

Although it sounds a bit strange that so simple foot-based sport didn't exist earlier (hint: even ancient Romans had something similar, archeologists found sculptures of football-like balls from that time).

"Even the euros know what real football is; NFL Europe ain't skinny guys in shorts tearing off their shirts"

lol, who would want to watch "NFL Europe" when you can go and watch a *REAL* rugby match, you know what i mean, rugby!, the one where they don't wear sissy helmets and paddings, and actually run on real grass...
As for football (the real one) the beauty of it is that anyone can play it, all that is required is skill. It doesn't matter if you are skinny, tall, short, black, white or blue, it's a game of skill, inspiration and team play.

I know it's important but when it gets reduced to name calling it loses all meaning.

Just FYI, here in Australia we're currently going through a complete shift from the name 'soccer' to 'football'. Our clubs, leagues, junior comps etc. have been renamed over the last 18 months to reflect the name change. The consensus is that if we're to be part of "The World Game" in a serious way, we should call it by its' rightful name...and I'd have to agree.

Back on topic, I can't wait to try this out tonight

Earlist record of football match is from 1712. Football (played with foot) was banned in 1409 by Henry IV of England.

Brazil isn't that scary. Usually the best way to handle Brazil is by playing offensive. A defensive strategy tends to be a disaster against them.

Play defensive and you lose for sure.
Play offensive and you just might win.

Football is a very, very, very old sport, and has existed in some form since the dawn of man. The Inuit people had a myth where their gods (or something) played an everlasting footballgame with the head of a walrus as ball. In South America was a civilisation who played football with a small ring as goal. The losing team was murdered.

Football was also played throughout the middleages in Europe, but in a different form than what we know today. It was played between towns, and the goals were sometimes kilometres apart, and everyone could participate. It was extremely violent, and got banned numerous times in various countries.

In the 19th century, English universites joined hands and set up the Cambridge rules, whch are still used today.

You'd be surprised how popular it is here. It's the most played sport at youth level, followed by rugby then Aussie Rules. I and all my friends played it as kids but that popularity just doesn't seem to translate to a professional level. If you want to do well and you've got some talent you have to go to Europe.

Mostly I think it hasn't taken off due to a mix of messy in-fighting and mismanagement, two things they're looking to correct with the new "football" push and the creation of the 'A' League.

Still, with a small population like ours and two high profile football codes already in place, it's going to be an uphill battle. But, fingers crossed, if the Socceroos do well that may change

Let me just quote John Cleese.
"You should stop playing American "football." There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American "football" is not a very good game.

The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays "American" football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football.

Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies). "

Cant really say I have seen the ascii-wm in action yet, but I guess thats what they use. AA-lib can be used for pictures aswell as videos

It's used by popular FOSS programs like MPlayer. I used it some years ago to look at videos through a SSH connection.
But now, there is better than that, libcaca at http://sam.zoy.org/libcaca/.
The same thing as aalib, but with colour, which is even better !!
And yes, it works in MPlayer too. I hope that's what they use.

I will have to agree but I dont think it is just that easy to defeat the Brazillian team just by playing offensive...because their offense is unmatchable IMO. So no matter how offensive you get they always take it a notch higher which forces you to play defensive...only if you can outoffensive play the Brazillians can you beat them. God they are amazing to watch though. It is sheer magic when they play...oh yeah added part of the attraction of course is the hot female Brazillian fans!!!

The brazilian team isn't all that strong. They were lucky againt Croatia. And their offensive isn't strong enough to play at full speed all 90 minutes.

But one has to be extremely disciplined in the defensive as well as the offensive to handle Brazil. But they are not all that they've been made to.

The only one displaying arrogance here is you (oh, and adapt as well). Nevermind that you somehow equate insults with arguments - oh well, your comments will disappear from this board to be ignored by all, as it should.

CFL- Canadians are not from the US dipshit.

If you possessed the minimum intellectual capability to read English, you would have noticed that I specifically mentioned that Football was called Soccer in the U.S. and Canada. I should know, I'm Canadian.
In any case, that doesn't change anything from the main issue: the whole world except two countries calls it Football, so that's what its name is. The sport you refer to is American Football, period.

Now tell me, I'm curious, how long have you used insulting people on Internet forums as a substitute for having sex with a woman? Seems like it's been quite a while...I guess you probably don't remember how it goes. Why don't you do yourself a favor and go find out right now?

Ummm no, the whole world doesn't call it football, and even if they did it wouldn't make it right. A few extremely arrogant asshats on this forum decided to start this whole mess. I just corrected it. period.

"Now tell me, I'm curious, how long have you used insulting people on Internet forums as a substitute for having sex with a woman? Seems like it's been quite a while...I guess you probably don't remember how it goes. Why don't you do yourself a favor and go find out right now?"

Gotta love this one. Fortunately some of us are adults and no longer live in mommies basement, moved out, got married. You know the drill, or maybe you don't. I could care less. Now, if you would look at my past posting history you would see that, no, I don't make a habit of insulting people on this forum. I simply corrected a mistake and was outright attacked by a group of idiots who can't look up the word soccer in a f--king dictionary. If it makes you feel happy to mod me down, go for it, I really don't give a shit. My life does not revolve around moderation from a two bit forum.

Most of the world does call "soccer" football. It's not about being arrogant. And it might make it "wrong" in your eyes. But that's a fact. It's not however something worth lowering yourself down to name calling for.

But if it makes you happy, we'll call it "soccer" and we'll call American Football "gridiron". How's that?
