Yeah, wait until this book.

I have the qt3 book, and it has too many incompatibilites with the newer subversions of 3.x to be a good tutorial.

I found using QT 3.3 with the book, the examples didn't work...gave up and used the doco instead

Will buy qt 4 book...

Got mine

I preordered mine on Amazon and got it a week or two ago. I was VERY disappointed in it. It is essentially the Qt3 book with updates where Qt4 is different than 3. I was hoping that they would have written a new version, with new examples and such but they didn't. As a teacher, I see this as a new edition rather than a new book. IMO it is a waste of money if you already have the Qt3 book, the section on the new M/V/C (or M/V without the C) is way too short to justify the purchase. YYMV

No, it's not open content. The first one (the Qt 3 book) is, since it is a Bruce Perens Open Source Series book. This one is not, for some reason.

But for anyone wanting to get into Qt 4 programming it has some valuable additions and updates to cover the new parts of the API. Even for owners of the previous book.

Includes new chapters on Qt 4's model/view architecture and Qt's new plugin support

Shows how to make the most of Qt 4's new APIs, including the powerful new 2D paint engine and the new easy-to-use container classes

Two Weeks Ago

One of the authors announced it in the Qt-Interest mailing list at least two weeks ago. I remember going out to the local book store on the tenth, after the announcement, to order it and they said they would have it within 8 to 10 days although I'm still waiting.

Frankly I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in using Qt, I have the printed version of the previous edition and it was an invaluable resource for learning Qt 3. The Qt 4 Assistant and online documents are handy, but I find it much easier to read and reference a printed book.

I imagine it's not open content because the QT3 book from which it is taken is always a best seller for Prentice Hall and they want to keep this one from getting out in the wild.

The QT3 book is quite excellent, so judging from people's opinions of how close it is to the QT4 book, I'd recommend it if you want a hard copy.

QT is, I think, the best C++ class library ever created, and reasonably open. Thankyou Trolltech.

For learing something, nothing can replace a real book. Geeks (like me) can read them anywhere; in bed, on the train, in the park, in the bathroom, on top of the mountain. But unfortunately, it gets outdated

For reference however, I prefer the online resources. Faster, better and stronger.

The first book...

The first book was a little useful because it had a few things that the Qt documentation did not (I purchased it). However, the documentation provided on the Qt site ended up being far more useful than the book. Based on my experience with the Qt 3 book I would have to say that I doubt the second book will be that useful.

Qt already has mostly excellent documentation. There are some places where examples are lacking, and that hurts, but overall the documentation is sufficient enough that a book like the first one wouldn't be terribly useful to some people. I certainly wasn't enamored with it.

Hmmm.... nice cover. I have four options:
1. Steal it (but i'll go to hell)
2. Wait for free edition ( but time passes so slow)
3. Buy it ( but it's too expensive)
4. Forget about the whole thing and look for some porn on the net... ( it's not so expensive, time passes nice and i'm sure god forgives me Edited 2006-07-24 18:52
