Really useful.

I could not agree more with this review.

Tengo really is great.

The only downside with this application, is that not enough languages are supported. Now if Danish was added to this application (as they say it will be), I would buy it in a blink of the eye.

If you own a PocketPC and frequently use one of the supported languages, you *need* this application!

A reply from TenGO

From Tengo, replying to this: "I would have preferred an option to individually pick letters in order to make non-recognised words, instead of the current way of striking through individual letters."

This feature is in TenGO, TenGO Free as well as TenGO Thumb and is called Auto Non-Prediction, where the letters that are actually tapped on (picked) will be reflected as a word choice on the right side of the hint display. Thus a user can just create a word by tapping on the letters exactly and then selecting the choice on the right.

Qwerty?

As this desing allready requires some training. What would the benefits/costs be of replacing the qwerty layout with something else? Perhaps a layout optimized for predicatbility.Edited 2006-08-04 18:10

That would be different for each language then, because each language has its own predictability rules. That would be a nightmare both for them, but also for the user who occasionally also types in english.

I second that. I just sent the idea to them. The more requests they get, the more likely it will be ported.

Thats a good idea, and I am working on something similar, just need to test it.
I think that instead of forcing an old interface where it does not belong, the interface should be designed with usage in mind.
Example: no matter how cool it looks, there should not be a Qwerty keyboard on a PDA, palm-sized device, Origami for primary input. It is insane to think that a kb layout that was designed for maximum inefficiency is helpful. tengo does not bother much, because it is not really a qwerty layout. I think its a great way to get people to not rely on a qwerty.
Fitaly is good.
a split thumb qwerty keyboard is bad. if it was not qwerty, but had a layout designed for being split w/ 2 thumbs, thatll be different.

RE[2]: Qwerty?

I think it might be mission impossible with heavily inflected languages (such as those of the Slavic family). It would take some really advanced AI to get those right. An alternative is to offer (typically more than a dozen) different endings for each word, which would erode its usability.
