I have the regular Windows XP Professional edition and choose to use Firefox over IE as my primary browser, I choose to use Winamp over WMP as my primary audio player, I choose to use Gmail as my email management "program", I choose Perfect Disk as my defragmentation utility and I choose to use Textpad as my replacement for Notepad. I also choose to use replacements for XP's built in CD burning, compressed files and graphics editing.

There is plenty of choice for Windows users if they so choose to take advantage of it. If some still don't believe they're given choice, then they certainly can choose to use Linux.

As for not being given the choice to get Linux machines or a copy of "Windows N" from Dell, HP or alike they can certainly choose to purchase a PC from another reputable supplier. Many offer extended warranties and to be honest my experience is that it's many of these local PC suppliers that offer superior service over the larger corporations like the above mentioned. It was not a new product suggestion for a new Microsoft product , it was made illegal to Microsoft to ship other versionon the European territory.

Its as if a drug dealer say I started selling/distributoin of milk to my usual drug clients and supplier and they refused to buy it. Exactly. Plus it's not like the end user was the target for this version, but rather companies (for the corporate desktop) and especially OEMs (so they could bundle other media players). How many times have you looked for it anyway? Did you look anything when it was first released? I mean, if retailers had it then and noticed noone bought it, why would they continue carrying it? Scream about choice all you want, but if there's no market for a product, noone will carry it either.

As for advertising. Why would anyone advertise the N version explicitly? "Windows XP Pro N! Now without built-in media player!" really sounds like it would make people buy it. Advertising for Windows XP is enough, and people that are interested in upgrading from an older version can check for themselves what upgrade options there are.

99.99% of all consumers couldn't care less which version they get. They just want things to work. Prosumers are a different story, but if you belong to that group, you know where to find what you want anyway. And in regard to advertising. They could advertise like this: "Windows XP Pro N! Now with uninstallable Media Player! Take control of your Windows!" ... Average Joe won't care, but power users would care. The problem with ordinary XP is that WMP is uninstallable. And that's also the reason behind EU(SSR)'s (unfair) attack on MS. For the advertising I disagree with you. I was under the impression that N don't come with a media player, so your ad is factually incorrect.
I can't see any positive sounding swing for N myself.

And I think power users can find the N version on their own if they need to get it.

If I had a need to buy Windows XP as a normal consumer, I might very well make sure I get the N version, because I don't use WMP7+ either way. (I don't know if the old classic 6.4 is retained in N or if that is removed too... if removed, I wouldn't get N)
