"Nintendo Wii Launched in Europe, UK"

Right...so the UK isn't considered a part of "Europe?"

Someone please explain to this poor American (US) why the UK is rarely considered a part of "Europe?" (I see this a lot, people referring to "Europe and the UK")

The UK likes to put itself apart from Europe, and companies alo usually treat the UK differently from the rest of Europe. Hence, they get mentioned separately.

It may also have some thing to do with the fact that you can also have "Main Land Europe" which does not include the UK, due to the channel between the UK and the rest of europe.

People probably just drop the "main land europe" section

I wonder how much of it is also due to the fact that we speak English, and the rest of europe does not, and as such inreasing familiarity.

The people of the United Kingdom have always been like this...

The Scots are Scots, English are English, etc.: don't tell us we're Brits!

And when it comes to Europe: don't tell us we're Europeans, we're Brits!

It's a bit like how the French always want to go their own way. The Brits are a lot like that, except not French. It annoys me to pieces, because the Brits are pretty much like the Europeans on the continent, including the French people that they love to loathe.Edited 2006-12-09 12:15

I'm from the UK, and I don't see myself as being from Europe, nor do I want to be known as European.

So the Americans have it right

This is the first time in ages I've seriously considered buying a game console. It's a shame they're sold out everywhere or I'd spend this time fighting enemies in Hyrule.

Well, it does sound very interesting and if I had the cash the wii is probably what I would buy since I have bought every other nintendo console and loved every one even though my first gamecube did not last long.

too bad there's no OS on the wii. a game console would be the perfect opportunity for an alternative OS to get a foothold. Like an amiga or commodore 64.
