Here is my desktop right now:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/141/338575637_7421208683_o.jpg
I use a pretty standard KDE, running on Mandriva LE2005.
I am a hardware developer, and I find that wallpaper very nice (I use it about two years...).
I have a lot of incons on it because when I download a file or copy, and dont know where to put him, I place on desktop because its the only folder I look everytime, and its th eonly way to delete files I dont use anymore. Someday I will change my temp dir o Desktop
And of course, I like blue a lot!Edited 2006-12-30 17:05

I have a Sun Blade 100 running as a (poor mans)network storage at home. When I feel like logging in thru remote X11, I'm welcomed by a nice and uber lightweight E17 desktop that almost makes me forget I'm using an old low end sparcv9 workstation. I encorage you to grab everything off cvs and compile it for yourself. I can send a tarball of my e17 local compile and a list of CSW packages you would need have installed.

Happy new year y'all

I use ReactOS 0.3.1 (pre-release) and as main operating system still WinXP SP2.

Basicly, both ReactOS and WinXP have a very similar GUI and change settings is a piece of cake. Usually I change the GUI settings once, after the initial OS setup. Later I change only rarely my desktop wallpaper(s).

The following screenshots show my ReactOS installation in September 2006. You can see more screenshots of my ReactOS 0.3.0 installation on the ReactOS website:

"Are you cluttered or clean?"

Definitely cluttered, since I have most of my working files on the desktop. I assume there are more of my kind than the average screenshot suggests, since showing a screenshot with all those files isn't very tempting. :-) If I make screenshots, I usually either hide the icons or use a clean user account, so it wouldn't be very representative.

This may give you an idea though. ;-)
I am also trying to use the dexpot desktop pager to better organize my workflow. So far, I have had mixed results.

And after that I tweaked my black/white/gray theme Nightshade which I'm using now until I feel like using the KDE default again. I tend to change colour schemes once in a while, wallpapers more often, usually after I have drawn a new portrait, but then I use 6 virtual desktops with different wallpapers each.
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/45347040/
GTK uses the KDE colours now as well btw.

Is no one actually inspired to customize their desktops?

Here is a screenshot from my OpenBSD desktop from a couple of years ago.

http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=338614780&size=l

OpenBSD
FVWM 2.5

Every time you minimize a program it takes a screenshot and makes a small icon that you can click to recover the program. Probably with XGL these days you can get them to be live icons. Translucent menus (if you need them) because everything is key driven (ctrl+n for mozilla, etc)

Anyway, just figured to step this up a notch.

Using Fluxbox on my media pc I think I'd sooner customize that one than the KDE I use on my laptop. I haven't looked into it, but I think it might be easier to do so as well.

I think every geek passes 'desktop madness' at least once in their life

I mostly modified kde to the extreem, tuning it here and there , day in day out, making improvements and then suddenly, the next day, start out a complete different theme. My poor friends had to endure these user-hostile desktops each time

But these days I gotten lazy and only want 4 things:
1) Quick acces to multimedia (musi, complete movies)
2) Quickly developing my small projects
3) No cluttering, I need to have overview (the bigger the screen the better
4) My daily dosis of internet news & comics

And then the unbelievable. Win XP is actually faster on this crap than any recent Linux distro KDE, GNOME or XFCE. Arch Linux with KDE comes closest.

I like a clean desktop area, it makes the life easier to know that everthing is in it's right place and not in an "I put it here in the meantime"-location.
Another thing I disklike is the Finder, for more than one reason.

I used Pixadex and CandyBar. I should put togehter a Buuf IconPackage so people can easily apply all the BuuF icons quickly.

here is my 300 mb (Xpbased)Windows HN 300 mb finished install (i never go anywhere without my install cd for that syst) Comes without internet explorer , advantages are no overactive desktop to munch ram and no Themes service among many other things i just run my programs/projects and it works fast

The Best security is remove insecure Programs/functions and control the services that are running

Hi,

To be completely honest, I'm not totally sure what I'm doing that makes it span both.

My Sax2 config looks like the monitors are both in 1600x1200x16.7. I have Dual Head Mode check for Xinerama at 1600x1200. 3D acceleration is on.

In Screen Resolution in the Control Center, I have it set to 3200x1200--maybe that's the key for stretching the entire desktop across......

Would be happy to send any config files that might help you..... let me know.

Gentoo 2.6.18 + Weather forecast wallpaper

http://tinyurl.com/y64ckp

This is my main KDE desktop. I've tried messing with beryl, radical color schemes, etc. and I can make it look a lot cooler, but it becomes a lot less usable in the process.

Window decoration is something called "powder" from kde-look which I like a lot.

Because I am running at 1920x1440, I see no reason to be minimalistic. I like a desktop with everything a single click away, which is pretty clear. My main consideration is being able to have 4 terminals simultaneously displayable; this fits the bill.

The wallpaper is a Perl script which grabs weather data and maps (Weather::Underground, available through CPAN, is particularly useful!), along with other system data, and composites everything into a single jpg and then sets it as wallpaper once per hour. ImageMagick can be used in a variety of interesting ways - especially in KDE, whose weather applet is awful.

Anyway, nothing exciting here except I really like my weatherpaper script

Hmm... it "contains" a character by Dmitry Popov from his image called "Ninja" -> http://www.jetarts.net/g1_img_8.shtml . You can find more of his works on that site. In other words it's a rip, not that it matters here but I just wanted to give credit to the original artist.

> A true minimalist wouldn't even use a window manager.
> Just use GNU screen with out X - now that's minimalism.

Well, I live in the real world: I use screen, it's a wonderful tool, but I don't see any reason why I don't have to use X. Shall I have to write my svg files by hand, or edit audio session using split? I don't think so.

I'm a concrete minimalist, I follow what is - for me - the most efficient and pleasant way to make things done

Blackbox on Gentoo

Some time ago(4 years or more), I spent 2 or 3 days investigating a "perfect" desktop for me, with the following requirements:

* no icons on the desktop, my windows desktops always end up really cluttered, so on linux(my main os) I wanted _nothing_ on the desktop.

* I wanted to be able to run the same environment on my then underpowered laptop and my main computer.

* 64Mb of RAM on my laptop(I have since then upgraded my laptop, but it's still useful to have a lowmem environment)

* I have to be able to control volume and playing/pausing/resuming the mp3 player that is constantly playing without having to restore the window.

* I'm an alternating php/c/c++ developer, so I need to have a browser constantly open to look up documentation, an editor to code, a (fast!) terminal to ssh to remote machines, a MUA to read/write emails, and an mp3 player to play some music while coding.

and I ended up with the following:

* blackbox for my window managing needs
* gkrellm for launching programs, controlling xmms/bmp/audacious, a clock, memory usage, etc...
* firefox for browsing
* scite for editing code
* audacious to play mp3's
* aterm for a terminal
* sylpheed to check my mail

None of the programs have high requirements(except firefox), and fit completely on a very custom gentoo 64Mb system. The only big dependency of most of the programs is gtk+, but as it is a common dependency, it is only loaded once in memory.

I haven't changed the desktop since then(except for some slight adjustments), and I must say I find it pretty comfortable for everyday use, on 3 computers with different resolutions(from 1400x1050 to 1024x768, and previously on 800x600).

Fairly minimalist

I am fairly minimal. I have a hidden panel in the top right for the tray and a clock but that is it. My Mac is the same way; I disabled the dock and removed everything but the menu bar. I rely on keyboard shortcuts and for things I do not have a shortcut to I just type the command. On the Mac I use Quicksilver for everything. So basically clutter on the desktop serves no purpose except to distract me.

Both are xfce4, though I only recently (~ 2 months ago) switched from FVWM. The first uses xfwm for the windows manager. On the second I use beryl or xfwm if i am running dual screen.
The wallpaper is a representation of the Godesses Maat and Isis who look after me and the application is Ghemical showing the results of a simple quantum chemical calculation.

RE[4]: unix minimalism

> Well, I live in the real world

I did operate with X and without a window manager for a few months, at least on my work machine. The work didn't involve very much, so the lack of a window manager freed up some screen real estate and ensured that the interface elements were always in predictable spots (the geometry parameter is a very useful tool).

I also setup a computer for my father without a window manager. All he wanted was a web browser and email client, and anything else on the screen confuses him terribly. Having Navigator launch full screen, without the possibility of other stuff appearing on the screen or of things moving around greatly reduced the burden of his technical support team (me). And it saved the aforementioned support team from being awaken at strange hours by the telephone.

To this day I regularly use screen and bypass X altogether. It is great because you can simply detach the screen, login to the machine from a remote site, and continue from where I left off. I understand that you can do that graphically with tools like VNC, but screen is faster and ssh is more available.

The minimalist approach may not appeal to everyone, nor is it useful in all circumstances. But it is a valid approach in the real world.

As for my desktop: in normal circumstances, I use whatever is stuck in front of me. Bouncing around between computers (including Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X) means that I cannot have a consistent desktop experience anyway. It also means that I would have to spend considerable time tweaking each system. So why bother?

If you want my icons, download or purchase Candybar from Panic Software. Then you can use this icontainer package. Remove the spaces and visit this URL:

http:// firsttube.com /uploads/ adam-buuf.icontainer

It is about 2.5mb, and, as Kroc mentioned above, it contains the BuuF icon set configured for OS X as *I* chose. You may choose to tweak it for yourself.

My "Sundew" Desktop

I'm using BBlean (Blackbox) on XP, with a program I've written myself that renders a wallpaper (which updates on the minute) and has a special circle-based file browser interface (which you can embed pictures in - like sticky posters - per directory).

The temporary name for the project was "ActiveWall", but I will be changing the name to "Sundew" for public distribution. Until I post the final app (maybe the source) for free - NO you can't have a copy of it yet, it's very beta. The small bead in the middle gently grows and sprouts (animated) icons in a round or square (not shown) fashion.

* An older picture with two drives:
http://jam.t35.com/uploads/Main.ScreenShots/W1.jpg

* A picture with the interface closed:
http://jam.t35.com/uploads/Main.ScreenShots/W3.jpg

* A picture with the interface freshly-opened:
http://jam.t35.com/uploads/Main.ScreenShots/W5.jpg

* A picture while browsing 'Desktop':
http://jam.t35.com/uploads/Main.ScreenShots/W4.jpg

I will continue adding features, but for now there will be no open widget api, as it changes too often and I'd hate to annoy people with a moving target. I will continue to post details at http://jam.t35.com since some of my friends have also taken interest.

FVWM

I rarely post here, in fact, since registration started, I'd never even gotten around to registering until now. I'm a desktop junkie -- if that makes sense. I used to be 100% console, but once I discovered FVWM I found I could make a truly capable desktop that made things fast and easy, but also good looking.

The desktops you're about to see are over a years worth of on and off configuring towards FVWM. They are built on a number of my own scripts/work as well as some other peoples. The presentation is minimal overall.

The top 100 pixels or so is taken up by a media player (mpd front end) and a several line terminal. Both can be "rolled up" using F1 and F2, and a maximized window will go over them. The bottom bar is not complete yet, as eventually it will have more than a battery monitor and the pager on it.

FVWM's pager is perhaps the best I've ever seen. You can drag windows off of it, cross between two pages, like seeing the right half of the first and the left half of the second. You can even sidescroll through all your windows that way, breezing across however many desktops you might have. The ability to move windows in the pager and "pick" them from it is by far the feature I cannot do without. I can switch to an empty desktop, and pick windows from the three others right off the pager into the clean desktop.

In addition to that, using a series of scripts I open music, videos, and images from my menu. I can even download and view the latest of my favorite comics, or select my wallpaper. Like others, I also have the thumbnailed view for minimized windows.

All of this is sloppy focused to make fast use of middle click copy and paste.

Anyway, all the graphical applications I use are GTK2 for the sake of a unified look and feel but also simply because I tend to prefer most GTK2 applications. I stay away from gnome libraries and gnome dependencies as much as possible, preferring the simplest applications to do the task at hand.

Applications include Firefox, Thunar (file manager), Sylpheed (e-mail), Tea (text editor), GIMP, and PyMPD (for a mor iTunes like front end to my music).

That all said, here's some simple screenshots:

Functionality, not Photoshoppity

My friend and I are having a disagreement over which is better, having a nice picture in the background - or funtional features. I say functionality is more important, and besides - I can incorporate a background image if I wanted, but I preferred the simple beauty of gradients. Besides, there are folder-linked images that display wallpaper-stickies, so there is a kind of wallpaper - it just changes.

I posted a few more:
http://martin.ankerl.com/files/desktop-eclipse.png
IMHO KDE's fullscreen-feature is the most important feature of the window manager :-)

Other than that, I like it very clean:

Hello,

I've used a proof of concept on Windows XP, developed for Toy'd (http://www.toyd.org), it looks like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGJGfNWkS4Y

Lots of improvements have been done, still proof of concepts, you can see them here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKtxa5ilW2Q

Toy'd is still under development, all 3d features won't be available on the first release. We're hardly working on it, stay tune

Happy new year all !

Here's my main OS/2 desktop... It's **CLUTTERED**

I try to put things on my Warp toolbar (which disappears into the background until I doubleclick somewhere on the desktop), but that hasn't helped. :-)

I opened up one of the toolbar folders to display some of the graphics programs I play with here. No shortage of software in OS/2 land...

http://www.visi.com/~rsteiner/richwarp.gif

Oh yeah... The wallpaper is based on a world bitmap and is dynamically generated (wrapped around a sphere) every 30 minutes with a specified viewpoint, light sourcing location, etc., using a little program called globe. You can see the config screen here:

This is my Program Manager as it looked in 1995, just before ruining it by installing Windows 95. Yes, I really used _that_ color for window title bar, and I still like some of the concepts in the Win3.1 interface.

I'm not going to post my BeOS, Zeta and XP desktops, because I made some hard drive swaps and they're not ready yet, and I just don't like my Mac desktop because I don't like Finder and the Dock at all :-(

WIDESCREEN? One way of looking at it.

This is my primary workstation running XP SP2 -

http://battletech.hopto.org/images/desktop_dec_2006.jpg

21" center @ 1600x1200 (sometimes bumped to 2048x1536 for 3dsMax and Autocad), 17" to the left @ 1280x960 (NOT x1024 - no ****ed up aspect ratio for me) with the taskbar in portrait so I can actually SEE THE TITLES of running applications (*** SHOCK ***) and finally a 15" on the right @ 1024x768... I used to have a 19" over on that side, but it shit the bed... of course since they are all running an ACTUAL 100dpi physical, XP is set to 'large fonts/120dpi' (since windows is designed to run 96dpi 'internally' at a physical 75)

So that's a whopping 3,904 pixels across - and nowhere NEAR enough for what I do... (I seriously need two more of these 21" CRT's). The outer monitors are running off a PCI Radeon 9250, while the center one is on pair of PCI express Ge7600GT in SLI - all from the same machine... and I STILL have a third PCI express slot free

Normally there's a lot more showing on the desktop than there is right now - I've usually got three copies of win32pad open editing HTML, CSS and Javascript (and sometimes a fourth for php/mySQL), paint shop pro going, copies of Opera, FF , IE6 and IE7 open for browser testing (with Safari open on Dellmac), a copy of 98 and a copy of Ubuntu running in MS virtual PC (for testing IE5, Opera 8.5, Konqueror - as well as font rendering differences between large fonts/small fonts, cleartype/standard, freetype vs. windows, etc, etc, etc...) Oh, and let's not forget the multiple copies of acrobat pro running full height on the center display...

Thankfully, being sunday it's a slow morning.

I'd post up my linux P2 laptop, but that's just a stock Xubuntu install... I'd post up pics from the Dellmac (Inspiron 2500 running OSX 10.4.8) but that's just stock with the stock 'stones' pic... and the G3 laptop - well, System 9 is just embarrassing (there's a reason it's being converted into a wall mounted LCD picture frame)Edited 2006-12-31 17:00

Here's a screenshot of my current desktop. I run Windows XP SP2 (heavily personalized) and run Kubuntu in a VMWare virtual machine. Unless I am using Kubuntu to do something graphics-heavy, I normally run its software through an X-Server running on Windows which allows me easily use Linux software and Windows software together.

I get the transparent effects via Ecliz_Deluxe2 (Ecliz_Deluxe_Tranz scheme) skin for Windowblinds. The icon bar on the right is Windows PowerPro as is the text above the system tray. The start button has been removed (with StartKiller) and replaced by Free Launch Bar menus.

My desktop pics

I currently have two desktop machines. My windows box is a pretty default install... nothing fancy. I use it for playing EQ2 and WoW and such.

My laptop on the other hand I use for programming, work, email, chatting, etc. Currently it is running Ubuntu 6.10 + Beryl.

I do not use a taskbar (I hate task bars...), so I generally organize my windows on virtual workspaces, keeping things like Firefox and Evolution maximized to their workspace. When all else fails I use the window list (you can see the icon for it in the top right corner), or more recently I have started having beryl show scaled versions of each window for the workspace I am currently on.

I do not keep any app launching icons either, as being an ex MacOS X user I have grown WAY to used to using tools like Deskbar, using Control+Space to bring it up any time I need to launch something.

Sorry for the file sizes of the pics being large... I have not really bothered to convert them.
