If you really look at it, 85-90% of the software Ubuntu and Fedora are running are the same. Sure, they both might apply distro specific patches or bugfixes cherrypicked from the latest cvs, but it is all the same.

"User experience" is what sets different distros apart and branding happens to be one of the biggest parts of that. I don't know many people using Linux that don't change their desktop background(s) and icon sets to something different from the default. If they don't, they either like it or wouldn't care whatever desktop look you throw at them.

If they don't like it, and wouldn't know how to change what they see, they're not likely to use Linux anyway.

Either way, I see mostly irrelevance here.
Screenshots are useful and interesting for new GUI tools, remarkable DEs, and fresh window wobbliness, but they're a waste of bandwidth when it comes to a bunch of silly icons and wallpapers. 1. X uses alot of CPU (60% on GF4600Ti with latest nvidia drivers)when just scrolling opera or firefox!
2. syslogd and klogd uses upto 76% with simple network transfer of 350MB files
3. "hdparm -i /dev/hda" resulted in 1900MB/s cached and 70 MB/s buffered on WD Raptor SATA Disk with 10,000rpm rotational speed
4. java 1.6 jdk when used by azureus 2.5 will use 170% CPU Time seen by "top" tool
5. > 4 heavy multitaking is almost impossible, but not just this, It will frees "gdm", and you cannot troubleshoot then because of bad kerenl scheduling of processes (bad inturrupts handling/prioritizing/switching)

All this will disappear with me when I use opensolaris 11.55b on the same hardware.

I wish fedora could fix these issues soon, because my taste started to shift to Unixy, and I might buy next a solaris based workstation for my heavy needs.
Till now I have 3 workstations (2 RHEL 4.4, 1 FC 6).

2. this really depends on your hardware - some nics are like winmodems and offload a lot to the cpu. funnily enough my realtek 8169 gige cards are supposed to be crap, but in fact they outperform my intel pro 1000ct cards on cpu usage and top speed. i've never seen more than about 10% cpu shifting gigs over the lan. i don't think its a driver issue.

3. not sure what you're trying to say there. my wd-satas (not raptors, but 16mb/7200rpm/sata300) get 60MB/s, but i think that cached reading of yours is wrong.

4. well that's java for you, blame sun for that! but seriously, i've never seen it that bad, however it usually is the highest cpu hog on my machine, same goes for java 1.5

5. i don't get your point there. is this relating to 4? i've never seen performance of anything get that bad. do you have enough ram or a multi-core/ht cpu?

i've been into solaris for years, i've used it as a desktop, but that pretty much sucks, i'm about to put a netra in a datacentre though, sun kit rocks as servers.

as far as screenshots go, yeah they are pretty pointless if only to show off eye candy and not new apps.

i do get fed up of osnews articles not actually mentionning new FEATURES of new releases, just the new theme.... That's funny. On my PC that command results in information about my hard drive. This is unsurprising since that is what hdparm -i does.

Also, the average transfer rate of a Raptor is about 70MB/s so I can only assume that your displeasure with the results is due to severe mental retardation. This is confirmed by your other points.
