To the critics

To the critics of the OSNews comics:

1. Thom was very upfront about his drawing abilities. And yet the drawings have, in general, been better than what I would probably have come up with.

2. If you think you can do better, or know someone who could, volunteer, or ask if they want to volunteer to collaborate. Think of what we have gotten so far as a prototype, or proof of concept, and not a finished product.

3. Those who can... do. Those who can't... teach. Those who can't teach... become critics.

As an aside: From the preview on the main page, and in the context of some recent comments, I thought we were in for a NetBSD toaster joke! ;-)Edited 2008-02-01 15:32 UTC

Thom:

I don't understand the message... are you bashing Apple, the cube, the AirBook, or Steve Jobs?

I'm not trying to be over critical here like some others, but I find the jokes kind of "wishy washy." I get the impression that you want to make a statement, but that your comics lack focus, or maybe you need to go a little further with the humour.

Keep at it, though. Failure lies only in not trying. All the best.

I find this to be one of the better ones, I think its hilarious. I guess we have a few too many fanbois here to admit that the potential for it to be another "Cube" is high.

Only difference is that there are alot of people with alot of disposable income these days. It may not be as bad as the Cube, which was a awesome design, just to heavy on looks and light on function.

I'll take my m1330 over an Air anyday, and keep the extra $1k in my pocket lol.

1. Thom was very upfront about his drawing abilities.

I'm sorry but that just doesn't cut it. Inkscape is free and Thom would, with an hour or two of doing tutorials, be able to recreate every comic done so far in just 10-15 minutes. We're not asking for photorealistic shading - the same b/w line style (i.e. just outlined basic shapes in SVG) would be fine but it'd be smarter and easier.

3. Those who can... do. Those who can't... teach. Those who can't teach... become critics.

Weak. Better way to look at things is if there are strong critics then you have to think very carefully whether one is doing the right thing. A few minutes of time with an SVG app and his critics will all but disappear.

A few minutes of time with an SVG app and his critics will all but disappear.

Doubtful. Some people enjoy criticizing others' work too much for improved quality to deter them.

But since you have the answers... and since it's so easy (just a few minutes with the right tool), why don't you volunteer to help on the artwork?

Personally, I think the raw sketches have a certain, err... rustic charm. ;-)

Also, consider that the purpose of the work is not to win awards, but to reduce the tension that tends, too easily, to build up in these forums.Edited 2008-02-02 01:34 UTC

What ads? I pay the nickel a day membership because I enjoy the site. Subscribers don't get ads.

At any rate, I can see that it is pointless to appeal to your better nature because you don't seem to have one. And there is really no need, because you've made it abundantly clear how much your opinion is actually worth. And not just to me, I'd wager. But to pretty much anyone around here who appreciates work done by others on for his or her benefit.

BTW, and in case you didn't know, no one is paid to look after OSNews. It is entirely a volunteer effort. What little money that comes in from ad revenue and membership fees goes to paying for the costs of the site so that the volunteers do not have to pay the bandwidth costs, etc. out of their own pockets.

Have a nice day.
I happen to enjoy the comics. Keep up the good work Thom.
