This, however, cracks me up every time:
'Wenn ist das Nunstück Git und Schlotermeyer? -ja, Beierhund das oder die Flipperwald gersput!'

....but then again, that's the funniest joke in the world

Argh. Don't be an idiot.
Trust me, compared to black-humor-jokes * that I've heard in the army, this one is benign. (Though I did spill my coffee out of my nostrils...)

While I can see it wasn't meant as any kind of jibe against the armed forces, and I doubt many servicemen would take any offense at it, the punchline maybe is a bit of a hard sell in these times, when there are a growing number of future grandads in our society who'll have their own tales of the horror of war to tell their little ones (in the happy circumstance that they return in one piece).

It probably didn't help that I'd just watched Nick Broomfield's "The Battle for Haditha" before reading the strip, mind you -- harrowing stuff

I was thinking about that just the other day, about how every generation had something heroic to talk about. WWI, WWII, and even Vietnam War to a certain extent. Today, what do we have? "I went to war to pay for college and get chicks, nobody told me I had to kill people for real or I'd lose a limb!!" In the future, our generation will be known for being lazy, playing video games and having done next to nothing for society as a whole.
