A first release candidate of version 4.4 of Qt, the cross-platform C++ development toolkit, was released today. Thiago Macieira says that this is considered release quality and good enough to use for most tasks. Major new features include support for Windows CE, a WebKit-based HTML rendering module (WebKit is based on KHTML and used in Safari), a Phonon-based multimedia module, XQuery 1.0 (and thus XPath 2.0) support in XML, a concurrency framework allowing multi-threading without the mutexes needed previously, and a new help system. Downloads are available (source, Windows and Mac installers) from Trolltech.

I don’t think that’s a result of the Nokia acquisition. Remember the greenphone from a few months ago? And qtopia phone edition existed even before that, I believe. I think it’s much more likely that nokia acquired trolltech because of their already existing support for mobile phones (whether to use it on their own phones or to stop their competitors from using it remains to be seen) rather than to reformat a desktop platform onto mobile phones. It doesn’t seem to make much sense the other way around. And from a recent trolltech developers blog (http://labs.trolltech.com/blogs/2008/04/01/news-from-the-inside/) it seems that they’re working on getting qtopia running on nokia phones, a prospect I find exciting. I’m looking forward to the day I can choose between a nokia phone running qtopia, a gphone running android or an openmoko (also with qtopia). Things are definitely looking up.

The WinCE port was in the works for quite some time. It’s not a result of the acquisition by Nokia.
