Overview?

There seems to be little excitement about this release, so a question: What are its major benefits apart from a step towards GTK3?

Does it ad new featuers that allow new things to be done? is it faster? Better integration with Windows?

Incremental updates of software are good, but I had expected there to be some enthusiasm at the release of such an important toolkit. Instead it took a few days for any site to report its release. Weird.

(btw, I am not complaining, just nonplussed.)

A further question, will the next Major release of GTK be GTK 3, or will there be like a GTK2.18 first?Edited 2009-03-16 21:05 UTC

There seems to be little excitement about this release, so a question: What are its major benefits apart from a step towards GTK3?

This release has nothing to do with GTK+ 3.0. Development for GTK+ 3.0 takes place in different branches, for example:

http://live.gnome.org/GTK+/NewThemeApi/Hackfest/Branches

It's linked in the article:
Since there will be at least GNOME 2.26 (on wednesday) and GNOME 2.28 before GNOME 3.0 (AFAIK), I assume that there will be a GTK 2.18 release, too. (usually 6 months release cycle)

FTA:
GTK+ is free software and part of the GNU Project. However, the licensing terms for GTK+, the GNU LGPL, allow it to be used by all developers, including those developing proprietary software, without any license fees or royalties. GTK+ is the only 100% free-of-cost open source industrial-strength GUI toolkit available today.

Is that claim entirely correct? I have no qualms with the first sentence ... but isn't the latest release of Qt (Qt 4.5 and later, and also Qt Creator) also licensed under the LGPL license?

Did I read that wrong, or are the GTK+ authors trying to claim that Qt and Qt Creator somehow do not qualify as an "open source industrial-strength GUI toolkit"?

Seems the text from older announcements are being re-used here. Just drop a mail to the GTK release engineer sending the announcement.
