The Streets

I don't really like The Streets or really dislike them, but I ended up getting annoyed with them like I do with nearly all acts with so much hype surrounding them. When they first got big it seemed like you couldn't turn a corner without someone yelling "Ahhh Mike Skinner mate, poet of our generation!" And you'd just be in the pub and Dry Your Eyes would come on for the fiftieth time when you're trying to talk to your mates and it would really get on my wick.

I think a large part of being able to enjoy popular music comes down to whether or not you're okay with having the same song rammed down your ear holes morning, noon and night for a month. If you can take that and still walk away with an appreciation for the music then fair enough, but for me and other grumpy killjoys it just makes me fed up.

Well I didn't expect to be discussing this type of thing on OSNews when I got up this morning!

That's exactly why I avoid music media like the plague these days. I don't do radio or MTV, don't read magazines about it, no nothing.

But yeah, back then, Dry Your Eyes was played far too often. My usual tactic in such a case is to shelf the album in question for a while, and return later on when the hype has passed. Works wonders.

I like the first CD but I'm not quite a fond of the 2nd and haven't heard the 3rd yet. I too avoid listening to the radio. Too many repeats. They take a good song a ruin it by playing it way too much. I do enjoy www.woxy.com when I'm on a PC though.

I don't do radio or MTV, don't read magazines about it, no nothing.

The first two I can understand, but why avoid magazines? I find that they're and excellent source for keeping up with new and interesting bands coming out. So what is your source for keeping up to date with what's happening in music. Can you recommend any websites that are good? I've looked but I've yet to find any that are of any sort quality, certainly nothing like some of the better magazines.

I've never heard of the Streets before, but if one of his songs is as good as Fiona Apple's "Waltz", i will definitely check it out.

I too rely on friends for any good music. They got me in to Cat Power and Emiliana Torrini a long time ago.

Wowow there son, I didn't say it was as good as Waltz - because that's a mathematical, scientific and theological impossibility (with Fiona being both god and the meaning of life). I only said that the song has the same theme .

If that can be called music, than Boy George can be called a man.

I'd rather have my ear canal cleaned with barbed wire than listen to that nonsense. But hey, to each his own.

1) What I find is that music I can normally tolerate (not necessarily like to the point of wanting to purchase it, but willing to tolerate it when I hear it within ear shot distance) becomes annoying when person whom I find annoying is listening to it. Case in point being my next door neighbour before I moved up to where I live now; quintessential white trash and booming Lady Gaga in all hours of the morning.

2) I tend to listen to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Grinderman, The Smiths/Morrissey, Muse with some odd bits and pieces from oldies artists. With that being said, my taste of music goes beyond rock and I tend to listen to Sun Ra, Miles Davis (Bitches Brew, 'pharaoh's dance' being my favourite), John Coltrane and so on. A good variety of music is what I prefer rather than just sticking to one genre.

I lean towards the heavier side of music, but anyone who writes a line like, "I want to go to heaven for the weather, but to hell for the company", needs to be checked out.

I will listen to the radio but I try to avoid the classic rock stations. They have ruined Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd and a few others for me.

Thanks for the music diversion. The last time I caught one of your music articles was when you mentioned Drivin 'n Cryin. I hope the classic rock stations never get ahold of 'Fly Me Courageous'.
