Apple is now creating new EULA licence prohibiting more and more things from users.

But for the Average joes, they only care about if stuff works like they should. So if it runs great and features a good design, they'll buy it. I don't like sticking up for Apple but their kernel and webkit(which supports alot of web standards) are opensource.

On the other side, yes their hardware is locked in and their licence agreements are horrid. and don't worry, apple has a really good QA team which makes sure your friends application works and does not brick your ipod. you can have quality or freedom, not both.
