“Coincident with Tuesday’s release of the UnitedLinux distribution, the SCO Group is announcing shipment of SCO Linux 4.0, based on the UnitedLinux product. Though it will be the SCO Group’s first release under the “SCO Linux” name, the numbering convention is in keeping with the company’s previous existence as Caldera, whose last distribution was 3.1.1.” Read the report at LinuxAndMain.

..I was actually quite happy with the UnitedLinux beta I tried up for size a while back. Now I’m curious about Webmin. I’d like to point out that back in the days of Caldera OpenLinux 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 they already had a powerful web-based administration tool, designed around LISA (Linux System Administration tool).
They later dropped LISA for a KDE-based tool called COAS (Caldera Open Admin. Syst.) which was developing very well, actually, and I was rather fond of it. But it looks like they’re not going to develop it anymore, in favor of, apparently, Yast.
I got Caldera 1.3 with a book, Learning Linux Visually. I used Caldera’s online Knowledge Base to learn how to load modules to get my sound to work (Pro Audio Spectrum, lol). It had KDE 1.something, and was the first distro that really felt like I could do everything I wanted to with it. I even installed DooM
But, I couldn’t figure out dynamic links, so I could not play with my registered DooM .WAD files back then.
Anyway, I bought version 2.3 in a boxed set with nice manuals and CDs, very professinal, but it seemed dog slow when I got it installed. I had a Cyrix 6x86l-150 at the time. It got replaced by Mandrake 6.1. I downloaded Caldera Open Linux 2.4 when it came out, but it too was slower than 1.3 or Mandrake.
I will miss the Caldera name. I think I love them most for bringing back DR/Novell/Caldera DOS, the better DOS than MS-DOS. They will always have a special place in my memory for giving me a fully functional Linux system, and I hope the company does well.
