It’s already been out for iOS for a while, but today, Android users can join in on this piece of gaming history as well. Chrono Trigger, arguably one of the best – if not the best – games ever made has just been released for Android. Whether you ascribe to that position or not, this 1995 SNES classic from Square was revolutionary in many ways (oh the music…), and you owe it to yourself to give it a go. It’s EUR 7.99, which isn’t cheap, but trust me: it’s worth it. My Nexus 7 just became even more useful.
That’s $9.99 for us in the States…
And R$ 30 for Brazil. Not worth the price for a game that already have re-released for PSX, NDS and others.

620.87 pesos in the Philippines. That’s way more than $10 U.S. I’ve only downloaded free apps from Google Play, so I haven’t linked my credit card to Google Wallet yet. Chrono Trigger is enough to make me start buying apps, but the reviews indicate the controls are a bit wonky. Has anyone here actually played the Android version already?
Having never played the game, I am earnestly asking whether the link to the music was on purpose, or whether there is actually a song like that…? Lol.
Yes it’s Robo’s Theme. What’s so “lol” about it? Yes, it is NOT one of the best songs of the games (see my other comment). But it’s a usual song of such a game.

I listen to the ReMixes from ocremix.org and the original SPC files ripped from the ROM.
Chrono Trigger is the game with the most remixes on ocremix.org (103 remixes). FF7 is second with 94 remixes. The song with the most remixes is Corridor of Time (15 remixes). Well, it’s at par with Dr. Wily Stage 1 from Mega Man 2, Overworld BGM from Super Mario Bros. and Terra from Final Fantasy VI.

The combat system sounds like Ultima VI (1990).
Even though I’m an Ultima fan the combat system used in SSI’s Advanced Dungeons & Dragons games was more fun.
I was an Ultima fan as well. Actually no, I was an Ultima Undrworld fan, to be precise. But anyway, Chrono Trigger was/is way more fun than Ultima, even if the latter involves more “role playing”.
Both Chrono Trigger and the Ultima franchise were great, nonetheless. Back then, RPGs had actual gameplay, not some cutscene-fest like modern day Final Fantasy crap where you play for 60 minutes and end up watching B-movies for 60 hours.
As for the Android version, I’m not getting it. Already own the Nintendo DS version that got released a few years ago. Don’t really have that much free time for such an engrossing game these days anyway.

It seems any game that features hit points and some magic can label itself an RPG. For example Infinity Blade is called a RPG while it’s just a slice ’em up game.
I have been unable to find an Ultima-like RPG for iOS, even though it should be easy to do one.
A few days ago I started playing Ultima IV on my Mac, it runs in some DOS emulator.

I have a DOS emulator on my iPad, never really used it for anything. It may even have been pulled from the app store a long time ago.
My plan was to dump Ultima IV in Dropbox and see if it then runs on any Mac. I already printed all the docs on the company printer when no one was looking.

Yes! That’s were I got my U4. I want to dump it in Dropbox because of the saved game, so I can play at home, bed and work. I assume it saves the game within the emulated app itself so it should run and play fine from Dropbox.

I would absolutely *LOVE*, and even PAY FOR, a modern-day RPG that included proper turn-based combat like the old AD&D/Forgotten Realms games. There’s really no better way to handle combat for a party of 6 characters going up against dozens of enemies.
I hate the pseudo-realtime+pause that all the modern RPGs are moving toward.
Seems to me that touchscreen devices would be perfect for this style of game. Yet, no one has come out with one (that I can find, anyway).

There are a few nethack kind of games, but nothing like AD&D or Ultima, which to me seem simpler to make than all those 3D and pseudo-3D games.
The AD&D combat system was very advanced and the battlegrounds were very large. Ultima VI’s battle system was nice, but much more limited in attacks ‘n’ spells although I prefer Ultima’s way of moving about (outside of battle) compared to AD&D’s 3D dungeons (too lazy to make maps).
Yeah, the fake-3D, first-person perspective of the AD&D games was annoying. But nothing comes close to the battles.
I don’t mind the isotonic (sp?) pseudo-3D of the later AD&D games (like Icewind Dale). I just can’t stand the realtime combat. It doesn’t work for parties of more than 2 characters fighting more than 2 characters. Adding a “pause” feature doesn’t make it any better.
I can’t believe that no one has remade the old turn-based RPGs for touchscreens. Even NES classics like the Dragon Warrior games would translate well to iOS/Android. And remakes of the AD&D games without the pseudo-FPS travel would port really well.
Alas, it seems we’re all doomed to drown in tower defense spinoffs and remakes of gorillas.bas.
Try Dragon Age: Origins. The manual programming of each individual party member, including the ability to still take control of them if needed, is pure gold (for me).
Hrm, interesting. Might have to find a demo of it to see if my laptop can handle it (it’s the only Windows box I have).

Chrono Trigger is definitely one of the best RPGs of all time. Being able to play it on my Android would be fantastic.
Has anyone tried it on a phone (as opposed to a tablet)? Does the much smaller screen size make it unplayable? (Should not, the DS’s screen is smaller than the screens on today’s phones).
