After Samsung announced the Galaxy S4, its futuristic slab of a smartphone, it was only a matter of time until LG countered. Today, at a jazz hall in New York City, LG dealt its hand in the form of the new G2, and not surprisingly it’s a lot like the other phone shipping from Korea this year.
It has its power and volume buttons on the back. I’m pretty sure that’s a comfortable location – but boy it looks terrible. Like Samsung, LG also slaps an absolutely horrible skin on top of Android, further adding to the dreadfulness of the G2. Yet another reason this is essentially an S4 with the buttons on its back.
I guess I’m not the target customer for this stuff. I wonder if any of us here are.
Guest mode was one of the features that actually looks pretty cool. The phone supports multiple profiles and you just use a different unlock pattern to log into a different profile like guest mode.

It also has an SD slot and removable (3000 mAh) battery which is something that a lot of S4 competitors lack. Looking purely at specs and nothing else it looks solid.
The S4 got a free pass because the only real competitor it had at launch was the HTC One which isn’t available on Verizon.
Oddly enough, multiple profiles is something supported on Google’s Nexus tablets but not their nexus phones. At least I can’t find it on my nexus 4.
I can’t imagine this is by choice on Google’s part… is there some stupid patent getting in the way?

Can you guess who wants to claim that a multi-user computer that can make calls is a novel and inventive thing if you just call it a phone?

Looks and sounds nicer than the S4 to me. Buttons on the back probably makes more sense, when anyone grabs my phone they always hit the volume button by accident. Still, I think using small bezels to make your phone smaller is a better idea than making your screen bigger on your huge phone.
From Samsung being singled out and enjoined to “stay classy” in regard to a practice common to the industry to this utter & simplistic dismissiveness over this latest LG phone, I am beginning to think you didn’t chew your kimchi properly once, Thom, and have somehow remained in the rut of Koreanophobic trauma as a result.
You need to go up the mountain, mate, and return with a tad more objectivity.
