During development of eCS 1.1 operating system defined standards was used. The eCS DevGroup published the eCS File and Directory Standard (eFDS) so you can test your own software product to compliance of operating system standards and release updated version if needed.

My preconceptions of EComStation (a bloated hack of OS/2 with outdated drivers and poor font rendering that was doomed to fail) don’t seem to be very true. This is a positive step (IMHO) and it has certainly raised my interest. Oh, I loved OS/2 back in those good old days. When it was a new, revolutionary design (and before Microsoft ruined its reputation).
Future POSIX compatibility (unless it does already? does it?) and LSB compliance could really help this OS (IMHO).
I will watch this topic with optimism.
…thanks to the EMX libraries. That’s how folks like me are able to run so many tools like slrn, links, lynx, XFree86, and GIMP under OS/2.
I think some folks are working on a “replacement” for the old EMX environment, though, something which is a bit more true to the Unix environment it’s derived from. That is probably a ways off, though. I admittedly don’t fully understand all of the stuff I read on the OS2-Unix mailing list. 🙂
