Windows

This is quite some while ago, so maybe some of these are obsolete now.

1. winzip/winrar
2. winamp
3. Mozilla Firebird
4. mirc/teamspeak/all seeing eye (aka "gaming tools")
5. gaim
6. The Gimp
7. jEdit or some other windows-only text editor which was pretty neat but I discovered it too late to use it a lot and now I forgot the name)
8. TheBat (also licensed, but the fact that I'm not even sure I'd still be able to find my key reminds me of how much I loathe proprietary software)
9. Getright
I think that's it.

Linux

Most comes with a default installation of Fedora/GNOME, with a few exceptions:

1. XQF (I don't like it, but it's the only choice)
2. Teamspeak (proprietary and ugly but very important)
3. The Nvidia driver installer (basically, that's an application :p)
4. The media players that aren't included in RedHat/Fedora for legal reasons (xmms mp3 plugin, rhythmbox with mp3 support, totem, mplayer)
5. Java and jEdit (though I'm trying to get away from this because it's a PITA, alternatives are rare though)
6. Red Carpet (no Fedora support yet for Ximian channels, but with Open Carpet it's a much more convenient alternative to yum)

And those are the standard apps that I'd get in any case:

5. Epiphany
6. Gaim
7. Xchat
8. Evolution
9. Gimp
11. OpenOffice

I don't use dedicated FTP tools anymore since both Nautilus and Explorer can handle FTP servers very well.
And the only download tool I use besides the one built into Epiphany is wget.

It is quite comprehensive, Eugenia. I myself do not reboot into BeOS often. (quite sad situation though)
But I must comment on that there's no MSN client on BeOS (at least usable yet)!

On FreeBSD, i also use gqview alot to view pictures It is quite usable for me. And rox the file manager is light-weight but quite good IMHO. How about DVDRip? awesome nifty tool for DVD users! To view pdf, i think acroread is still the better choice than gnome's default viewer. And as i'm not native english speaker (I am an asian lives in NZ) X input method is a must have for me as well.

Well.. the list goes on. I rekon I've installed too many packages on my desktop.

>10. All standard tools (ls, cp, mv, mount, etc) and the bash
> shell
>
> Now these three are definitaly not third party apps :-P

Hehe. Well, with #8 & #10, they're not part of the kernel. So I guess you can still consider them third party apps =D. With #9, Knoppix, I consider it third party since I use it as a tool for data recovery, migration, configuration, troubleshooting, etc. But that's just me =D

Gnumeric and GnuCash

I'm glad that Abiword got a mention, but you missed out some other important ones:

Gnumeric, probably the best spreadsheet application in the world.

GnuCash, probably one on of the most comprehensive financial applications in the world (and I'm really looking forward to the imminent Gtk2 updates).

There are many others for Linux... some more obvious, some fairly subtle:

Screen, Rhythmbox, Vim, gThumb, Straw, and more.

On a final note, with the availability of Gimp for Windows, I wouldn't have included Paint Shop Pro.

My 2 bits

I posted for such a list some time ago. Thanks. I use OpenVMS and Linux at work and Linux at home and no Windows anywhere.

- jEdit - couldn't live without it. It is even better than TPU on OpenVMS. Still, I miss TPU's learn mode.
- Konqueror - I do not understand the bashing it sometimes is getting. I find it remarkable.
- ddd - again a bullseye. I know it is based on gdb. I beats the OpenVMS debugger by far.
- KMail - It's ok for what I need.
- K3b - But I have not gotten it to work on kernel 2.6. I think because scsi-ide is broken and K3b cannot burn using cd-ide yet.
- TextMaker - I haven't worked much with it yet. But it is lighter than Oo Writer and appears to suffice for the MS Word writing that I need.
- Digikam - Another one that looks very promising and but that I have not spent any time on yet.

Quicken/MS Money

Which is one reason (two reasons?) why Linux is not as widespread as it could/should be on the desktop. (That and the fuzzy fonts :-)

(Yeah, I use a *bunch* of other apps, but these are the only ones I use in Windows with no viable alternative on Linux. And Charlie, I respectfully disagree - Gnucash is no competition to either Quicken or MS Money for comprehensive and easy to use home finance management. Neither are Kmymoney, MondeyDance or Kapital. I wish Intuit would port Quicken to Linux and do the world a favor.)

Apps

Windows
========

Adobe Photoshop
Dreamweaver MX
Fireworks MX
Flash MX
Winzip
MS Word
Super Notetab
Mozilla Firebird
Outlook Express
Quake3
Nero
GTKradiant
Adobe Acrobat

The list could go on for a long time if I include smaller apps. (when you do web and multimedia stuff, you need a lot of apps)

Linux
=====

Mozilla
Apache
PHP
MySql
Sendmail
SSHD
Perl
named
vi

I'm still meddling with Linux on the Desktop - I've always got another dev box at home that I switch over to (with my nifty keyboard/monitor switcher) but I'll admit that there's no apps on the Linux Desktop I need. (currently running SuSe 9.0)

Server side, however, my business absolutely depends upon Linux to function for the hosting of websites, email etc.

Hmmm interesting

I'm surprise there aren't many programs that are must haves for any OS. This is a bad sign for any shrink-wrap company left.

Linux comes with most of the applications mentioned and Microsoft is including alot of stuff starting with XP.

Anyways, my list really short.

Microsoft (windows xp pro)
1) Visual Studio 6
2) DotNet SDK
3) Java SDK
4) Eiffel Studio
5) Eclipse
6) Vim
7) Open Office
8) Mozilla
9) Acrobat reader
10) Flash
11) apache
12) Cgywin
13) VLC + WinDVD
14) Python
15) Mysql
16) PHP
17) Perl
18) Nero
17) Real one
18) Quicktime
17) Antivirus
19) Firewall

Linux (slackware)
1) Smart Eiffel
2) Eclipse
3) Flash
4) Xine, VLC + codec
WOW, everything else comes with the distro. No wonder it takes me less time to customize linux.

Though i guessed a bit, these programs are to my knowledge shareware. I take it you are one of the ~30 people who actually paid for mIRC? Shareware essentially means you'll have to pay for it after having used it for a certain defined period.

Wether you have limited functionality akll the time, at the time after the period is over or full functionality does not differ anything to this license. Shareware is "try before you buy", after the period you either have to stop using it or pay for it.

Result is, a lot people are actually using ie. mIRC illegally.

> Linux (slackware)
> 1) Smart Eiffel
> 2) Eclipse
> 3) Flash
> 4) Xine, VLC + codec
> WOW, everything else comes with the distro. No wonder it
> takes me less time to customize linux.

If you installed Dropline GNOME (http://www.dropline.net/gnome) you'd knock of Xine AND Flash. But anyway, eclipse is pretty easy to install and eiffel is a relatively obscure language so your point about Linux/BSD in general being complete is very true.

It's been a long time since I used windows and I believe that if I ever do some time in the future (very unlikely) that the list is likely to be at least as long as yours. I'm a Java DB developer also and things like MySQL, Apache, EMACS and NetBeans are absolute musts for me.

Minimalism till Realism.

Regarding user apps, every box i have contains the magic combination of 7 -- be it configured or not. Some are preinstalled, depending on the OS. Programs like "ls", "mv" and "cat" are not added. Sorted on relevance:

* OpenSSH
* Screen
* Bash
* Links
* VIm
* Mutt
* Irssi

Though OpenSSH only would be enough as addon in most situations. I'm still trying to get OpenSSH and a kernel (any kernel) together on a floppy.

Without these programs, i live in huge pain. Java to be added soon...

Regarding X, it is much avoidable and not important. I could live with OGG123, Sidplay2 and Mikmod instead of Xmms and XSidplay. I could live with console or TWM instead of Enlightenment or XFce (there's always remote X over SSH anyway). I could live with Xterm instead of Eterm. I could live with Links instead of Mozilla (Firebird). I could live with VIm instead of Abiword. Except for the list of 7, none of these programs are mandatory.

I don't use Windows though i'm way not always behind my own computer. In the occasional situation it is unavoidable to use Windows i'd only need PuTTy and a One Time Password (OPIE, S/Key).

That's it. And it still feels somehow over-indulged.

The only Free (Speech and beer) X11 program for Windows i'm aware of is Cygwin in combination XFree86. It wouldn't surprise me at all when it is slow, though i do not have benchmarks -- only a ~year old experience with XFree86 + KDE2.

On the other hand, there are also non-free (proprietary and commercial) X11 implementations which are ie. shareware. Several exist, just Google around a bit. I can't remember which ones i've tried i do remember i couldn't find a free one.

Just Google for ie. X11 Microsoft Windows or XFree Windows.

RE: dpi - minimalism till realism...
I don't understand what the point of using a computer is for people like you who only work from the command line... Are you against innovation? Do you do things like watch movies, use digital images, view pictures online? Do you only have a 33.3k modem that prohibits you from actually enjoying your computer? I'm not trying to sound accuastory or anything, but seriously... why limit yourself so much when there's so much more out there?

Good lists so far.

To the Unix/Linux list I would add Pan, which I think is the best newsreader I have ever seen.

As for the Dead OS Category, under OS/2 Warp - eComStation:

PMMail/2
PMView 2000
ProNews
The Graham Utilities (no relation)
Stardock Object Desktop 2.

I certainly agree.

Opera and screen would be difficult to do without, most certainly, as would nano (though if nvi supported syntax highlighting, it would do fine [elvis and vim are way too bloated]). Since I run FreeBSD, I love having portinstall.

Other apps that see a lot of use:

1. naim (a great IM/chat client without the bloat)
2. madplay (better compatibility and controlability than mpg123)
3. ssh (vital!) and sshd
4. rxvt
5. once in a while media apps: xzgv/qiv and mplayer
6. Some sort of window manager: IceWM works fine for full-screen apps, has good keybinding support, and has less bloat than most other WMs
7. top
8. Some sort of shell (bash or tcsh)
9. cvs/cvsup
10. xlock

@ Marcus

Hmm i'll try to explain my logic and show details. No offense taken at all.

"I don't understand what the point of using a computer is for people like you who only work from the command line..."

First of all, i don't only use the command line. I just stated the programs i can't live without and use most; which are all CLI programs. Though my X is also minimalistic, it is irrelevant for me to do the things i need to do. It is, for me, not required to function and i far from always use it.

My main reason to KISS is i prefer to be independant of "bloat" as much as i can thus i learn more "spartanic" ways thus i am autonomous and enlightened when the "bloat" is not available. While these "spartanic" ways also give me several advantages. I've experienced the dependancy on GNOME/KDE and X when i was a starter; and did not like it.

This is from my point of view a reflection to society. Where many people want to have the best of the best, some have enought with less. I never have the feeling to need the best of the best, be it soft-, hardware or money-wise.

In the case you want or have to live with "slow" computers, there's little choice for DE's like KDE and GNOME (besides, i don't like them, since they're not minimalistic enough). Though if you'd like to run, i respect such choice for one reason: you have the freedom and diversity to chose by default -- which i see that as a good thing.

"Are you against innovation?"

Not at all. I wish all Free software users a happy experience of their own. In the effort, i also wish the People progression, choice and diversity. My choice should not be forced upon others, while others' choice should not be forced on me. Though i am a strong believer in Free software, advocate it, and am inflexible regarding that.

Regarding innovation and the programs i'm using, i find SSH is a brilliant innovation. Much better than what i used before that: telnetd+ssl. I find Enlightenment a brilliant innovation too though i'm not sure if i'll use E17 when it's out & ready. I think GNU Screen is an innovative program as well.

(And i can do things with E16 which are not possible with KDE)

"Do you do things like watch movies, use digital images, view pictures online?"

Yes. But tell me, aren't these just "toys"? Isn't that visual stuff just for "fun"? W3m has image support (i've used it a few times on OSnews), MPlayer can be used on console (-vo aa, -vo cvidix) and pictures can be viewed using FBI. Except for AAlib, this be with framebuffer.

This, and The GIMP, and BitTorrent (ncurses frontend), and all the X programs i've named earlier aren't needed. The 7 programs i named are required for me. The rest -besides ie "ls, mv, cp"-, not.

"Do you only have a 33.3k modem that prohibits you from actually enjoying your computer?"

At home, ADSL. This is (at least for me) not correlated with running lots of resource-intensive software. I've ran KDE and GNOME years ago on 56k6.

"I'm not trying to sound accuastory or anything, but seriously... why limit yourself so much when there's so much more out there?"

I see it as limiting myself, i prefer simple, versatile methods. What am i missing? I don't feel like missing something. Flash? I miss that as toothpain, for example.

I've also noticed you putted up servers and the like. Except for OpenSSH i haven't added that kind of stuff. I've rather viewed it from a desktop perspective. Servers follow the same philosophy though.

Well that's it, i hope i gave you an interesting view.

BTW someone said they always install SVG Tracker when they install BeOS. Where can I get this?

My list...only for windows though

Mozilla Firebird (usually some nighty build compiled with many optimisations)
GoogleBar (essential, for me, addon to Firebird. It has some features that you won't find in original Google Toolbar. Don't use the experimental version )
Foobar2000 (very, very good audio player - that does only what audio player is meant to do - plays audio perfectly)
Miranda (with jabber plugin)
Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/, with Quicktime Alternative)
Filezilla (fast and lightweight ftp client and server (separate, both share the same name))
7-Zip (yes, right now its file menager has terrible interface...but if you're the kind of person that rather use context menus in explorer for archiwing tasks instead, you'll find this application usefull perhaps (not to mention being able to use 7z format))
Ghost-It! (http://home.rochester.rr.com/artcfox/GhostIt/ has the ability to create "ghost windows" - the windows that not only are transparent and always on top, but your clicks pass through them. In some situations very usefull. Not to mention spooky )
Wackget (http://millweed.com/projects/wackget/ very light and unobtrusive download menager. Well, in realiy you can hardly call it download menager - it's very, very simple. But I find it very usefull. Uses wget under the hood)
Slowview (graphics viewer. Don't let the name mislead you, quite fast rather. I like it's features, don't like look of its menus, but overall it's very good)
Sygate Personal Firewall
AVG Anitivirus
Soulseek

And one very good IM app usuable only here (but it's part of the jabber...but app, though astounding for default IM service application (and I've seen a few...), is only available in my language)
Oh, and there's also free (now - it's an old version, but I consider it the best one - light, no skins) video player with simply beautifull subtitles. So it may interest you if you watch some movies with subs in separate files...
http://www.koala.pl/download/KFP19Full.rar
Don't know what is the default language set on non Polish systems, so in case it's Polish: right click on program window, choose item "jezyk", second from bottom, and you will have more "normal" languages ;P

Great program, thanks to those who mentioned it, bye bye winamp...you served me well (Or at least the versions before 3 did). EAC + Foobar2000, seems like my Ogg requirements are finally met :>.

For the media: FFDShow and AC3Filter (both of them freeware).
Xircon and the famous Kano11 script/addon instead of mIRC and AvantBrowser for the Internet browsing.

My Linux list

KOffice: Quick, responsive, a decent amount of features, and it's mostly worked through all the stability problems it used to be notorious for. Abiword/Gnumeric are equally good, I just prefer KDE-native applications.
Gaim: I'm sorry, but Kopete doesn't even come close.
JuK: RhythmBox and other iTunes-esque library-style media players on Linux just fall over, but JuK is responsive even with libraries containing tens of thousands of songs.
k3b: Nothing even touches k3b. Don't even try.
Apollon/Nicotine: Why yes, I certainly can use Kazaa and Soulseek on Linux.
Pan: The best newsreader ever, bar none. Nothing else on Windows, OSX or Linux can touch it.
Konqueror/KHTML: It's gone from being the stripped-down and featureless underdog to my favorite browser in under a year. I guess there's a reason Apple picked it.
KDevelop/Quanta Plus: The best all-around IDEs for C++ and web development, bar none. Feel free to replace with Anjuta/Bluefish according to taste.
Xine: What an amazing product. It's a shame it's got so much competition from MPlayer and VLC.
Ximian Evolution: As fast as Qt and KDE applications run on my computer compared to GTK+, there's just nothing Qt-native that comes anywhere near Evolution in terms of feature set and integration.

YA List

MacOSX

Amazingly, I don't even have most of the stuff everyone else lists. I've made an effort to learn to use OS X with as few add-ons as possible.

Hitting the high points (stuff that can't be faked & isn't built in anyway):

Photoshop Elements (soon, replacing Photoshop 4)
Toast Mainly for hybrid CD's, for which I have to boot into OS9, it's too unstable and too limited on X.

CodeWarrior XCode has some good unique features, but it ain't in CW's league yet. It's good for creating new projects.
App-Ki-Do & Cocoa Browser Neither is complete by itself, and Cocoa is almost unusable without them.
Resorcerer
Interarchy (plan to test some others soon.)

GyazMail Only thing I can find besides (ugh) Eudora that lets me send with different return addresses.

Stuffit Only choice on Mac; also vastly better than PkZip, WinZip, etc, on Windows.

WindowShade X for the sole purpose of totally preventing anything from ever minimizing to the Dock.

BBEdit LiteOpens anything. Usually enough to get into Word documents.

Why not...

Here's my list of most important apps.

0. Gnome (UI control)
1. Mozilla
2. Gaim
3. XMMS
4. GKRellm
5. Synaptic
6. Firestarter
7. Open Office (gEdit/vi for simple text editing)
8. gFTP
9. Gxine

I'd like to find an image viewer that doesn't suck. Personally I think the image viewer that comes with XP is pretty good. It intelligently resizes images to fit whatever size window you have. It automatically lets you go to the next image in a directory without having to first go to File, then Open, and creating a "playlist" of images.

some additions

WINDOZE:
Xteq...a graphical system tweaking app
Zsoft's PC paintbrush...i have never found a better freehand painting tool on any OS at any price,no multiple undo and long filename support and may not run on versions later than WIN98,you can usually find this puppy for less than 10 bucks in the discount software bin at the local dept store.
Ultimate Paint...filters and special FX galore
Zwei-Stein..full featured freeware video editor great for combining small clips into a larger movie or other video editing tasks
ZipMagic...my favorite file extractor for Windoze ,it always seemed funny to me that windoze doesnt even come with a zip utility,while cheaper and even free OS's do
Window Washer ...nice graphical cleaner for your temp internet files,and such
SynthFactory....a freeware softsynth
Poodles and Flan...a fracal midi composition app,reminds me of a little mechanical Frank Zappa
BeOS5 Personal Edition ... a good test to see if BeOS will run on your Win Box.

BeOS:
MonoView....nifty little viewer app that will run any picture or video supported by BeOS,i always have the icon right on my desktop so i can drop a file on it,also has a replicant feature so you can use the pics or movies for walpaper
XRS....the ultimate rythym machine for BeOS
PersonalStudio....THE best video editor anywhere
Slayer..sorry ,I like this one better than Process controler!maybe it's the neat pentogram icon
BeOS clean up manager...Window washer for BeOS
BeConverter...converts units of measure,currency etc.
dCam...really cool app that will save a sequence of still pix as a movie file amongst other things, also plays all the pictures in a directory as a slideshow
Rack747...nifty softsynth,rythym machine has a random event feature to make it just sit there and jam out, very entertaining
There's just too many to list in BeOS actually as this is my all time favorite platform

Linux:
Most linux distros seem to come with everything but the kitchen sink but I recently Loaded a Mandrake 9.1 distro on my one box and found that amongst the wealth of apps that were included a few old favorites weren't there:
Compupic...wish I could remember where I put this app ,it was my favorite picture viewer for linux
StarOffice...runs just fine on Mandrake9.1
Xpaint...nice lite painting tool for X , Leaner than Gimp like the difference between Artpaint and Refraction in BeOS,loads faster and is nice when you just want to do something quick.this a[[ was sorely missing from the mandrake 9.1 distro,but I have a fairly new Debian distro on mt DotStation and it's on there.

MacOSX:
I Don't have a Mac new enough to run OS X, But If someone out there wants to send me one,I would be glad to test out any apps you would like,I'm the consumate Beta tester!LOL
besides It would be an Ideal Xmas present!!!

OSX

More 3.1 -- 12 years old and one of the primary reasons I still use a mac
Word + Endnote -- They're separate apps by separate companies, but it's the combination that really is important to me
Drop Drawers -- a wonderful interface for the mac
Eudora -- don't love it but don't want to risk converting either
Notational Velocity -- extraordinary note pad
File maker -- for almost everything to do with grading
My own apps: TAMS and books2burn

Linux/*nix
Bluefish -- since "upgrading" to panther I've trashed my copy; miss it dearly
gramofile -- main reason I have linux on any machine

RE: RE: Why not

**It automatically lets you go to the next image in a directory without having to first go to File, then Open, and creating a "playlist" of images.

gThumb is the best

gThumb does the exact thing I was saying I didn't like. If you associate JPG images to it, it will open the 1 JPG image you click on and then you have to create a "playlist" before you can see the rest. The behavior I'm looking for is a viewer that realizes there are other images in the same directory and will let you go to them with PGUP/PGDOWN or left and right clicking. So if I have a directory (folder) on my Desktop that has 10 images in it and I open that directory, click on any image in the list, all I have to do is hit PGUP/PGDOWN to scroll through them.

my list is almost all Win32-only

1) Ad Muncher! the single biggest headache-reliever, which saves me from megabytes of advertisements. It's the speediest, most effective ad-blocker out there. Available only on Windows. http://www.admuncher.com
2) NewsBin! The fastest, most efficient news robot around. Available only on Windows. http://www.newsbin.com
3) VirtualDub. For all my encoding needs. I expect this to get bumped down by Nero Recode2 soon. Available only on Windows. http://virtualdub.org
4) foobar2000. Rips, tags, plays all my mp4 music. It's the digital pimp, and it's only for Windows. http://www.foobar2000.org/
5) WinRAR. Kicks @$$ on every other archiver I've found. GUI version only on Windows. http://rarlabs.com
6) Nero Burning ROM. It's not as efficient as other burning apps, but it does EVERYthing. When Recode2 is released in about 2 weeks, Nero goes straight to number 1. Windows only. http://www.nero.com
7) Kazaa Lite. Close behind: ed2k, DC++. Unfortunately there's no official mirror anymore due to 'copyright infringement.'
8) Opera! i'd use Firebird, but it's still too slow. Expect Firebird 1.0 to take this place if it has inline autocomplete. http://www.opera.com
9) SpamWeed. Best Bayesian SPAM filter I've found. Better than POPfile - that says it all. Available only on Windows. http://www.spamweed.com
10) this space intentionally blank. Perhaps an email client should be here, but Thunderbird still sucks, OE6 lacks too many features, and Outlook 2003 just plain stinks. I expect Thunderbird 0.8 will take this spot when it's released.

12) SoundForge - since i'm over the limit anyways..
13) ACID Pro. Best sequencer for me.
14) ACDsee - another digital pimp.

The above are only available on Windows.

I never understood why MS doesn't make it more apparent they do have one installed (damn DOJ). I have run across ALOT of people who didn't know a Zipper is included with Windows. Just have to know where to look (Add/remove windows components).

What's important to notice is that Linux distros / *BSDs usually cover about 95% of their users' need. You can't say the same for BeOS, Windows, MacOSX etc...

However, most of the time, I like to add the following to my Linux distros:

1) Gstreamer's MP3/DIVX/de-css plugins
2) Totem
3) MAME + illegal ROMS (where can I *buy* the legal ROMs ?)
4) xMule for illegal download of music (when will it be possible to get songs for 1 EUR each in Europe ?)
5) Blender
6) Flash and JRE plugins for Mozilla

That's all. Everything else is already on the 3 CDs.

mTelnet (a Zmodem-capable telnet client)
QuickView Pro for DOS (http://www.multimediaware.com/qv/)

Without the first, I could't grab software from the several telnet-capable BBSes I still frequent. Without the second, I'd have a hard time watching the movies I make with my digital camera! :-)

To be honest, I also do some thing under Windows, and I find the following third-party apps invaluable:

* Mozilla/Firebird
* 4DOS (yes, I use a CLI under Windows)
* FTE and JFE (text editors)
* FileJet (fullscreen file manager)
* XnView (graphics)
* QuikMenu 4 (replacement desktop)
* PhotoGenetics
* Archimage (photo page website builder)
* SpaceMonger
* Quartz AudioMaster
* Anvil Studio
* QuickTime Player
* QuickView Pro
* Space

My must-haves for Windows CE...

Like most of us here, I use a lot of different OSes between home and a few jobs. These days though, and for a year and a half, Windows CE has been my primary platform. I am definately an anamoly in that sense. And in another way too- I am a Squeak Smalltalk user and developer ( http://www.squeak.org ), and because of the power and flexibility of Squeak, it is my operating environment.

For me, my must have apps on Windows CE are:
Squeak Smalltalk: What is there to say? Squeak is the bomb. It is like having Emacs as my environment, but is useful in a more conventional way. It is incredibly expandable, flexible, and dynamic; if I want to change the way something works, I can go in and change it.

One could say that you could do this with any open source system, but it goes a step beyond that- I don't have to deal with the temporal, computational, or emotional overhead with dicking around with a C/C++ system, spending more time on finding where I would make the change than the whole process of implementing and testing teh change would take in Smalltalk. Squeak has a lot of apps for it, which I use within the environment- telnet/xterm, IRC, full IDE, scripting environment, editors, etc etc.

http://www.squeak.org and http://spe.sf.net

ftxBrowser: A tabbed web browser, incredibly configurable. Embeds the IE that comes with WinCE, so I don't loose any of the functionality that IE 5.5 WinCE provides. Equivalent to somewhere in between IE 5.0 and 6.0- a very capable browser, especially on the high-res screen.

http://www.af.wakwak.com/~ftoshi/software.html

Rainer Kuechel's Unix Ports: Too many to list itemized. Thanks to Rainer's efforts, there are more well adapted ports of classic Linux/Unix apps for Windows CE than I found when using the Linux-based Zaurus. The apps I use more often are GNU Maxima (math software) and LaTeX.

http://www.rainer-keuchel.de/software.html

Dialect: I use this scripting language a ton. If you take the Python language, but give it the prototype-based object model of NewtonScript and the ease of development of VisualBasic 6 and you have Dialect. I do most of my coding in Squeak, but when I need to put together a pure CE utility to share with the Handheld PC community, I often do it in Dialect- you can write, test and run code on the PDA or handheld itself as well as deploy to an EXE. The EXE has an overhead of 750KB for the base runtime and library, which isn't that bad, compared to similar tools for Perl and Python.

http://dialect.sf.net

uBook Reader: I read a ton of ebooks. While I have a simple enough ebook reader for Dynapad/Squeak, uBook reader is very nice and very featured, so I stick with it.

My current main computer is the Sigmarion III, a WinCE.NET 4.1 machine. 800x480 16bit color screen (!), 64 MB RAM, SD and CF slots, USB host and USB slave port- host ports are very rare on PDAs- I can plug in USB keyboards, hard drives, scanners, CD-RWs, etc etc- and a very fast PXA255 XScale CPU running at 400 MHz. Wifi via a CF card, naturally.
4 iTunes (for my library needs after passing the winamp step)
5. Mirc
6. Texturizer
7. NVidia Drivers
8. Creative Soundblaster Drivers
9. Divx
10. Powerdvd
11. Region Free (or whatever lets me play my dvds)
2. Gstreamer PLayer, Totem, Xine, Mplayer (yes the whole lot)
