Heh. As the Kids in the Hall once said:

Bernd: Yeah, at first, the only real multi-user OS I’ve ever seen is Linux, Windows is not a multi-user OS, only Windows XP could be considered multi-user. At the log-in if you go to cancel, you can login. You can open and access other user’s folders.
Um, the NT line has been multi-user since at least NT4, and probably 3.5 (at least, that’s the earliest version I used). If you want to split hairs, I’ve heard people complain that NT4 wasn’t “true” multi-user because multiple users couldn’t be logged in at the same time (never tried, can’t veryify one way or another), but that still leaves at least 2k, XP, and Server 2k3.
As a related note, Service Pack 2 for the release candidate has been released andis available for download.
Just an FYI. Lots of stuff in it, by the looks of it.

This seems pretty ironic to ask since yT is, what, 13 months late, can’t be purchased from their web site, and Bernd gets really dodgy when asked about a release date. Market resistance….to what?

Windows XPs run as admin by default. It doesn’t enforce a true multi-user environment like Macs do. In fact, I have never seen a Windows XP user running as a limited user for his/her normal XP account. Most people don’t even know the feature “Run As…“.
Last time I switched my account to limited user, there was a lot of problems installing apps and games. I went back to admin mode very quickly.
The bottom line is that it’s just not designed properly into Windows XP from a user perspective.
In the second interview Bernd says something about Be being stupid heading for niche markets…. Bernd seems to seriously think he can wipe the market without a strategy and just take it all with his Zeta… ehrm modified BeOS.
BeOS IS a niche OS at the moment and WILL BE for quite some time…
I do hope we see a company like Sun saying that “we will push Java Obos Desktop” or something… now THAT would have been cool =)

I’m pretty sure that’s an option (I know there’s one in 2k Pro’s install) to always log on as the same user and don’t require a password, or require users to type in username/password. Now that I think about it, it may come down to a difference between the XP Home and Pro.

That’s true of Home edition I’m sure, but I would expect that it’s a bit of a different story when it comes to people running Pro (or 2k, for that matter).

I too have lots of gripes about the implementation of multi-user in 2k/XP (hey MSFT, would it kill you to, when I try to perform an action I don’t have rights to, prompt me for a user who DOES have the necessary rights? You know, instead of letting me get halfway through an install of an app and popping up a totally unhelpful “NO YUO!”esque dialogue).
There are ways around those annoyances – most of them pretty silly, like (in 2k at least) I can’t run as Windows Explorer, but I can do it with Internet Explorer and then type in a local path. Guess that’s what happens when your user shell and file manager are one-in-the-same.
The bottom line is that it’s just not designed properly into Windows XP from a user perspective.
I’m not quite sure I’d go that far, but it certainly does have some warts.
The problem I have with XP is I wish to have my “John” account to be a limited user account, and to have an admin account for root purposes.
My problem is I activated my administrator account, but I am not able to reduce “John” from admin priveldges to a standard user. It is just not possible in XP.
I am pretty sure when I was using 2000 it gave me more freedom in choice.
Maybe when I install XP I can skip the part about creating accounts. So that I will get only an “administrator” account where I can create user accounts.
BTW it is XP Pro I am talking about.

Well he mentioned support for USB 2.0, but we don’t really get the current status on that.

Five or six times faster? Seriously, I find this a little hard to believe. Of course, “throughput” is a pretty vague term – is he talking purely about pushing vertex data, or what? (Is he even talking about hardware OpenGL, or is the comparison with MS’s rather shonky software GL solution?)
One of the questions should have been,
Why haven’t your customers, some who have paid more than 10 weeks ago received Zeta yet?
Maybe he would answer them, he sure as hell hasn’t answered me or my emails. I am trying to support YT but I beginning to think I should have spent my money elsewhere.

YellowTAB received my payment on October 29th & I still have not received my copy of Zeta. They told me first it would be shipped Nov 3rd, then that it would be shipped the following week, & I e-mailed them a week ago for a tracking # & status report, & they STILL 7 days later have not replied! How is this for professionalism? I remember getting my copy of Be 4.5 & being able to call Be/Gobe & have a guy on the line walk me through fixing the DMA problems in my BIOS that were keeping the OS from installing. He helped me get it setup perfectly. I’m not expecting something that amazing from this company, but come on, they will lose potential customers at an alarming rate if they can’t even take the time to send the product & reply to the valid concerns of customers waiting for their product.

And like some of us said a while back, Zeta will be more negative for the community than positive…. You see, many that would like to upgrade have not falsely tried BeOS R5.1 (Zeta) with a few extra features and lousy attitude etc.
Now I’m afraid all these people won’t give OBOS a chance. Luckily yT keep saying Zeta this and Zeta that so let’s hope that they don’t pull the good rumour of BeOS down the drain but simply themselves…
All the Windows XP installations I’ve setup use a limited account by default and no one has complained yet and last time I saw each one of them being used the users were using them that way.
Also, some of those people don’t even have the password for the administrator accounts. Since they don’t need them and I’m afraid they’ll just screw the computer up if they did use them.
On my Windows XP machine, I also use a limited account by default. Right now I’m not playing any games on it, but I haven’t run into any problems really that I can think of.
Though… I have to admit it would be nice if Windows XP did ask me to enter my admin password when I tried to install something. But then I’m so used to running programs with “Run with different credentials” now that it doesn’t really bother me much.
Anyway… My point is that obviously it doesn’t bother some people.
As an update to be fair, I just received an e-mail back from yT saying that my order has been shipped & that they are really sorry for the delay. Things can get crazy busy with small companies around Christmas time, maybe we can attribute their pace to the holiday buzz & hopefully watch them speed up & start to impress. I’m hopeful. Thanks.

i can’t comment on what bernd thinks but Be’s decision to pursue a niche market may have been their demise.
they pursued the audio/video market. in order to get enough revenues to survice they would have needed high penetration because its a very small market. Its not totally realistic to expect a new comer to achieve high penetration in any established market in a short time.
so going after a larger (more mainstream) market may be wise. low penetration in a large market might be enough, granted that can also be difficult to achieve. But they don’t seem to be going after the entire market. Their actions suggest that they are focusing on education and developing areas or perhaps education in developing areas. education is a LOT bigger than a/v so maybe it will get them somewhere. this i know, a focus on a/v and hobbyists will grant them quick and certain death. the market is too small and there are not enough tools. there might actually be enough tools for the average joe who does some office word, browses the web, and plays a few games.
You should email to the address used to send paypal payments – you can get this from your payment history, with a copy of your paypal ‘receipt’ asking what’s up. I did this and received a reply in short order.

13 months late? Yes, 13 months ago we had a fully running system for developing internally. It was never used. I should know, I created it.
At any rate, yT will not get a dime of mine, as I will be getting a CD anyway, though I am not at liberty to discuss how, but it is indeed legal.
Bernd, if your going to do Multi-User, your best bet is to step up gradually. Your system’s base infrastructure for MUS is umm… gone. It doesn’t work. Period. Whatever your doing, stop it, and restart.
Anyway, my MUS is up and running now for PhOS b4 (private beta) and looks great as well. Oh well, I’m sure you can beat around the bush, push of questions, and figure a way make it seem like you never said multi-user in your life when it comes time to live up to the promise. Of course, you may just luck out, and someone there may hate me enough to try and better me.

LOL, way to toot your own horn.
Looncraz NEVER was an actual developer of yellowTAB, and actually if you’ve kept your eyes open he already said it himself some time: “I have no agreement with yellowTAB”. Would we hire people without having them sign an NDA? Haha, guess again. Of course, he did some programming (in the first few months of 2003, that was around the time of beta 3, 4) but in fact the work he did was crappy (and I still have sources). For instance, the RegisterApp was based on starting an endless amount of BMessage threads. That is useless and slows down the system a lot. Any “normal” or “good” developer would do it much differently. When closing Looncraz’s RegisterApp, by the way, it also closed by shrinking and falling down, a bit like it’s done in Windows. Only in this case it used max. CPU for a little while. Something else he did, for example, was adding endless amounts of fonts which caused us a lot of work to throw the bad ones out, or mix the new media_kit with the R5 one, causing a lot of bugs, messing up codecs… Frans was right when saying on ZetaNews that EVERYTHING that Looncraz did to/with Zeta has been removed.
In short, yes he has contributed bits to Zeta, on which we subsequently spent hours removing (as rewriting was quicker than trying to fix bugs), but never was a developer as he claims to be. See Zeta as a bathroom. While we were installing a bath, a shower, a sink, a washing machine and putting tiles on the wall, Looncraz walks in, sits down on the toilet, takes a shit (while replacing a few tiles within his reach by a few very ugly ones), doesn’t flush the toilet, and walks back out, claiming he also helped us with the bathroom as he has been inside the bathroom while we were working there. I’m sorry but it doesn’t work that way.
Wow! This must be in the top ten of the most unprofessional responses from a company spokesman. If this is how they conduct business it doesn’t inspire much confidence

Of course it is yt’s right to defend itself. It’s just that your posting was completely devoid of style. This open mud-throwing is usually encountered in backyard forums by anonymous flamers. It’s not recommended for a company that should try to show its professionalism.
Looncraz’ tantrums and his alleged uselessness for yt would be a perfect opportunity to respond with professional coolness, even wit. Yt’s failure to act in a mature way reinforces the impression that YellowTab is only a bunch of amateurs with a lack of self-confidence, discipline and clear company structure.
