I hope they changed that ugly theme.

I hope they just use the beautiful crystal theme for XFM and I also hope they have dropped mozilla for mozilla firefox and will offer a download of thunderbird 1.0! I can't wait to order. This distro rocks!

I hope it's a single CD. Too much redundant crap really makes installing Linux (and using it afterwards) a pain.
It'd be nice if Gnome replaced KDE (yes, I use Ubuntu and a kernel update would be nice (for all my USB devices).
Well... I hope they will post information on how to get it soon. I am a premium subscriber so I am kinda surprised the press get to know about the release before me :-)

If you get it, how's about a review when you check it out. I have purchased the first 2 editions and have not been that impressed with it. Slow, kernel not current, and you got to download their packages or you can "break it". Anyways, lets have a good review before the excitement begins.

Just installed 3.0 on my Dell Latitude D800 with Cisco Airo 350 wireless PCMCIA.
After a 15 min installation time I see a clean and well designed OS.
Everything simply works!!
It took me 3 clicks to enable my wireless connection.
Again... no suprises. Very good job Xandros (and off course all beta testers)!

According to presales tech support at Xandros, version 3 does *not* run VMware. That's all they said, no explanation. So, does that mean it will run with some manipulations (as in version 2.X), or is it "no way jack, ain't gonna happen!" Of course, I'm talking about Xandros as the host running VMware.

Save your money

I bought the Deluxe edition yesterday, foolishly believing the hype and looking for a distro that "just works". Well, Xandros just doesn't work.

It died a couple of minutes into the install. After the nVidia splash screen, I got a black screen with a cursor and nothing else. It sat like that for 15 minutes before I got fed up. I tried it two more times just to be sure, and it did the same thing.

My hardware is all very common. It's an i865 based motherboard, and has two SATA drives and an MSI PATA DVD burner as the CD drive. The video card is a Visiontek made nVidia card and the sound card is an Audigy 2. Fedora, Ubuntu, Knoppix and Libranet all work perfectly on this hardware. So much for "just works".

I sent an email to Xandros support and got a message back saying they would contact me in as little as five days. Maybe I have overly high expectations, but when I pay $90 for a distro that claims to have good support, I expect a quicker response than that. The free forums for free distros are much, much quicker.

I posted on the Xandros forums, but there are other people there with similar problems to mine that haven't got an answer yet. If this were Fedora or Ubuntu, I'd have had six answers in ten minutes I'm sure.

So, I have to wonder, what exactly did I pay for? I wanted a polished distro that I wouldn't have to pull my hair out to get configured, but it won't even install on common hardware. I wanted fast, helpful support, but five-day waits certainly don't meet that criterion.

I'm very disappointed in Xandros.

Actually, your dual SATA hard drives are really not that common yet and are probably the problem. I believe I remember something about this on the Xandros Forums regarding version 2.0. Try disconnecting one the SATA hard drives during the installation. This may work. Afterwards, simply connect the other drive. I believe it may be a problem of Xandros not knowing of which drive to boot from intially. Anyway, it's worth a shot.

greetings from Xandros

Well, that did the trick. Having two SATA drives is apparently what was making the installer choke. Thanks for your help.

I'm curious, is that really such a rare hardware configuration? I have two computers here both with two SATA drives, but maybe it's just me. My mother has a similar arrangement, but I guess that doesn't mean much seeing as I built that one too.

Any ideas why Xandros wouldn't be able to handle such a set up, while every other single distro I've tried had no troubles?

Anyway, the install was fast and it looks pretty nice so far. I'll post more when I've had more time to play.

Thanks again Dannie.

Is software raid available now during install, or did they still leave that one out? I am waiting to see before I even think about purchasing it. And no, your configuration is not rare in the least. It is very, very common these days (dual Raptors for me =). Thanks in advance.

I honesty can't tell you about RAID setup during the install as I don't use RAID. I have two separate drives, one data and one for the OS and programs because I like to switch distros every few months and don't want to lose my data to a stupid mistake on my part.

There are posts on the Xandros forum, however, that indicate there are still problems with RAID. But your mileage may vary, I guess.

Accoring to the technical FAQs at Xandros:

"With a redundant array of independent disks (RAID) storage system, data is stored on multiple hard disks, which appear on the system as a single disk. RAID helps to protect data and improves performance.

Xandros Desktop OS does not currently install onto IDE / SATA RAID devices."

The verison listed for this FAQ is "all". Not sure if that includes 3.0 or not.
