What specs, exactly? I find that quite hard to believe given that there is a freely available hammer architecture simulator as well as raft loads of ISA docs and fully functioning kernels available from http://www.x86-64.org

What on earth are you talking about? Do you know that at this point in time, XP-x86-64 uses WOW64 like XP-IA64 does. 32bit application performance is correspondingly abysmal. I really can’t imagine what you think you’re talking about. Would you care to elaborate?

Chewy: Hammer is still based on the x86 architecture. They won’t have to come out with a new version (and actually, they don’t have to come out with a new version for IA64 either, just a new hardware abstaction layer).
i was just thinking about getting new notebook and new pc with AMD CPUs but I think i’ll go with intel since amd is too microsoftist …. don’t know if there is such term but you know what i mean ..

I fully understand this, but it would be like running Windows3.1 in standard mode on a i386, IMO an utter waste.

in order to have a laptop ms-free you will need to create your own OS, your own CPU and new IDE standard. even mac is using ms software. or get a transmeta laptop with linux/bsd or a naturetech sparc based laptop for a lot of $$$
If you want to go with the notebook processor that is the least Microsoftist, get a Transmeta.
Remember when we used machines based on their utility? We bought what we needed based on what it could do? Heh.

if i was ever going to get ANY mobile device i would get a Transmeta processor, bar none.. it lasts the longest on batteries BY FAR.

Was I (along with my friends) the only ones who liked the animal? While we’re at it were we (again myself and my friends) the only ones who liked Joe Dirt (kind of related since both were pretty universally panned). btw I totally agree (except for the Schneider jab), I can’t believe people are letting ms decide their hardware (imo thats letting them exert more control over your computing then someone who uses windows).
Hammer would be Enero, so, my guess it would be Windows XP Enero… maybe Windows XP SE Enero.. :p
I beleive transmeta’s early lead on power consumtion, has been earsed and surpassed by Intels newest lines… whether or not the manufacturors have taken advantage of this I do not know. BTW to bring this back OT, has anyone seen anything on a 64 bit laptop chip from intel or AMD yet?
