I've been running Xgl+Compiz for about a week now. It's really amazing. Ubuntu Dapper (currently still in development) already has all the packages you need. Check the Ubuntu forums for a nice HOWTO on how to set this up (I'm too lazy to look up the URL right now
. It took me about 15 minutes.
I have a Geforce 2 GTS, which uses the legacy nvidia driver. Works fine though! Stable and smooth.
With the plugin system I think we can expect some nice new plugins over the next couple of months! o/
