Games Sony's PS3, scheduled to be released near the end of this year, has been slated to have a hard drive that will support and will even include preinstalled Linux. This could be a breakthrough event not just for Linux but also for other alternative operating systems as well. The PS3 will almost certainly sell millions and millions of units, providing a unique opportunity for people to try something that would be more difficult on their regular computer.

The difference is that it would be easier to put your own linux on the PS3, and possibly legal as well.

I'm not too sure about that. I mean with DRM and if they close source the bootloader, the drivers, require a special compiler, etc... Sure you'd have the source code to the kernel, but without the rest of it they could potentially pretty much force developers to start all over. Of course... It depends on how good of a job they do locking it down.

Also... Sony has a history of frowning on things like this too. Just look at homebrewed games and the PSP. Sony pretty much likes to keep things "mainstream". They throw little gadgets at the rest of us (like the Linux kit for the PS2) every so often, but they don't seem like what we do overall.

Also... They might have Linux on it just so they can throw another "buzz word" out to try to impress people and to look "anti-Microsoft".
