RE: Mac OS X and generic hardware

I still think it'd be in Apple's best interest to sell Mac OS X as an OS for generic x86 hardware [...] Of course it'd more or less kill their hardware sales, but from what I understand right now they make more money on their iPods than they do on selling their Computers.
It's close, but Macintosh sales still outshine iPod sales; $6.275b in net Macintosh sales, $4.540b in net iPod sales in FY2005. This doesn't tell the entire story, of course, but even grouping the other categories as appropriate, Macintosh is still in the #1 spot.
No, I'm not an Apple investor.

I still think it'd be in Apple's best interest to sell Mac OS X as an OS for generic x86 hardware, especially if it used 64bit extensions. Sure, people would pirate it, but people are pirating the hacked version now anyway, they may as well release it for the honest people out there as well!
If you think about it, that's how Windows got so big, it was pretty much the only choice for a very long time, especially since Microsoft wedged it's way into the OEM market. I can bet that Dell would distribute Mac OS X based systems in a heartbeat. This would gather more developers and with more software being developed, would gather more users.
Of course it'd more or less kill their hardware sales, but from what I understand right now they make more money on their iPods than they do on selling their Computers.
Just some thoughts. A very happy birthday to them! Though I always prefered the Atari and Amiga computers...
