Not so much preference

Not as much 'preference' as it is 'easier'. For some reason I find it easier to partition my HD than to get a virtual copy of my target OS+software to run it. In most cases, it's the cheapest way, considering a lot of free emulators/virtualisers aren't feature complete/bug free, or otherwise run dogslow (think: Bochs).

VMWare Server 6 is both excellent and free.
