Cant really say I have seen the ascii-wm in action yet, but I guess thats what they use. AA-lib can be used for pictures aswell as videos.

It's used by popular FOSS programs like MPlayer. I used it some years ago to look at videos through a SSH connection.
But now, there is better than that, libcaca at http://sam.zoy.org/libcaca/.
The same thing as aalib, but with colour, which is even better !!
And yes, it works in MPlayer too. I hope that's what they use.

I think type in www.wordlcup.com and it will orient you to FIFA's site. You can check timings there! And the amazing thing that people are ignoring I guess....is that how are they converting the live game to ASCII?! Is there a poor programmer typing the game as fast as he can?!!
