Microsoft In a Q&A, Neelie Kroes, who fined MS for not complying with the EC's antitrust ruling, said: "I regret that the Commission has had to take such a step today, but given Microsoft's continued non-compliance to date, I have been left with no alternative. Today's decision reflects my determination to ensure that Microsoft complies with its obligations.Microsoft has claimed that its obligations in the decision are not clear, or that the obligations have changed. I cannot accept this characterisation - Microsoft's obligations are clearly outlined in the 2004 decision and have remained constant since then."

As a programmer, I find the things the EU is asking of microsoft are completely outrageous. They want microsoft to open source their API's and give them to their competitors. Thats the same thing as asking Coke to give Pepsi its ingredients. Its an insane request from people who have something against microsoft.

I know I shouldn't feed the trolls, but...

You do know the difference between OPEN APIs and OPEN SOURCE APIs? If not I think you've got quite some reading to do before you make your next comment.

I agree with you. I think as a programmer he/she should have known the differences.

Let me explain this to you.

1.) Microsoft is not being asked to open its API's.
2.) Microsoft is being asked for specs on its network protocols.
3.) You can already read all kinds of lovely about Microsoft's Application Programming Interfaces. Its network protocols are another story.
4.) "Open," especially in the context of "Open Source," means to allow others involvement in changes. Much like an "open-minded" person is malleable in their opinion, an open specification (be it software, an API, or a protocol) allows outside groups to contribute. In Unix permissions: Open is similar to rw-, where viewable is r--.

And the Coke ingredients are written on the side of the can, the FDA already requires that. I think it may actually be a decent analogy too! Unfortunately it just doesn't show your side of the argument.

The fact that people have voted your comment up just goes to show that, just like slashdot, first comments always get inflated scores. It's sad really, but there's nothing I can vote you down for (you're just wrong, and that's allowed here).
