Hey, this sounds exactly like what the Chinese are planning to do with their next Godson implementations. Also http://www.yellowsheepriver.org looks interesting, they meanwhile have updated their specs, though no mention of intended marketprice for that. Neither about commercial availability. As far as i recall in general about their ..uhm.. "mips-ripoff" which it really doesn't seem to be, because it's realized totally different internally, and the instruction set is so widespread, they plan do have a 4 core Godson rather soon. Very interesting to watch that marketsegment move, since BLX IC Design partnered with AMD in the development of Thinclients, AMD sold anything MIPS recently, and some folks involved with that all founded or will found something new. Even more interesting would be the possibility to buy such a thing for cheap, as you mentioned. I imagine something which is as fast as something like a PIII@1GHz, would have something like Vias Padlockengine on board, and would come in Mini- or NanoITX formfactor, but so far...no go.
