Hardware vendors write drivers which rely on undocumented behavior, that breaks with new OS releases? Color me shocked.

Undocumented behavior? I'd call it more of overly complex driver model. If you havn't seen the Channel9 video on Kernel Mode Drivers you can see that they're working on improving it to handle a lot of the mess which could lead to problems.
