Trust me, people do look. And they even send in patches out of the blue. And eyes do watch commit messages. I've had emails / IM messages coming in minutes after I've commited code that someone has found an issue with.

Sure, people look at the most popular projects (ie. Linux kernel, Apache, Firefox). But what about the thousands of lesser known projects? Who's watching them? I would submit that few people actually watch them.
