OpenStep, GNUstep The popularity of OS X among geeks in recent years has led to a lot more people discovering OpenStep through Cocoa. GNUstep provides a much-needed Free Software alternative, as David Chisnall explains.

>>> As for themeing, that is something that is high on the agenda for the next few months.

I think the GNUstep project would greatly benefit from dropping WindowMaker as the official window manager, and going with Gnome instead. Another step forward is for GNUstep's AppKit to support GTK natively, and include wrappers for freedesktop technologies such as Cairo, FontConfig, Enchant, GStreamer, FreeType, etc.

This would instantly create a mature alternative to Mono for developers that are interested in both Linux and Macintosh as target platforms.

PS -- I didn't mean to exclude KDE. With my limited understanding, it seems Gnome's GTK toolkit is still mostly C-based, so it would be a more logical candidate for integration with GNUstep than KDE (C++).

Er... WindowMaker is the "preferred" WM, but that's all. Gnome is not a window manager, it's a desktop. A GNUstep-based desktop doesn't NEED to use window maker -- for instance étoilé has its own window manager, Azalea.app .

Why support GTK ? it's a much worse framework than GNUstep's AppKit ! beside, we have a Cairo backend, we use FreeType, etc.
