Linux KVM, the kernel-based virtual machine for Linux, will be merged into the Linux kernel , according to Andrew Morton's merge plans for 2.6.20. Besides VMware, Xen, qemu, etc., Linux users now have a full virtualization solution built in the kernel which supports running unmodified Linux or Windows images.

well qemu without the accelerator module you cant compare to vmware, as qemu is then a fullblown emulator, and as for the accelerator module, well, it doesent work too well..

however kvm is entirely different, and you probably shouldnt "heavily believe" that vmware is better, it may be more mature... for now.., but i doubt its faster, of if it is, for much longer.
