Talk, Rumors, X Versus Y George Ou compares Microsoft Office 2007 to OpenOffice 2.2 in memory and CPU usage using the OOXML and ODF file formats. The conclusion according to Ou: "We can see that the OpenOffice.org ODF XML parser (while vastly improved) is still about 5 times slower than Microsoft's OOXML parser. OpenOffice.org also seems to consume nearly 4 times the amount of RAM to hold the same data. While OpenOffice.org continues to have fewer features than Microsoft Office, it continues to consume far more resources than Microsoft."

"Could it be possible that some people prefer the OO.o UI? Why is that so hard to believe?

Different strokes for different folks...that's still allowed, isn't it?"

It's possible, but I'd guess that those that claim to prefer OO.o UI would still claim as much were MS Office and OO.o to swap their UIs. And I'd say that if OO.o or any OSS suite had Office 2007's UI, those same people would hail that UI as a triumph of OSS. I think that you know deep down that there is truth in what I say.

I disagree. I think to infer such intentions to people you have never met is misguided.

One could say the same thing about you, after all. We know from your posting history that you are a pro-MS poster through and through...one could theorize that if MSO and OO.o swapped their UIs, you'd still say that MSO's was better than OO.o's.

I find this particularly amusing since OO.o's UI is now closer to the old MSO's than Office 2007's is to the latter. Personally, I prefer the "classic" MSO UI to OO.o, but the difference between the two is relatively minor. I don't really like the Office 2007 UI.

Ultimately it's irrelevant. They are all good UIs, and none will make you write any better. Some of the best books ever written were made with typewriters, for cryin' out loud! I think we are grossly overestimating the importance of a word processor's UI here.

I am currently writing a novel on OO.o, and I don't feel that it is hampering my work in any way. In fact, I don't see any real difference between using it and Office 2003 (which I use at work every day).

One thing I *do* know is that OO.o offers much more value for the dollar. That I think we can all agree on, even die-hard MS supporters.

I disagree. Have you used Office 2007? The dollar value when i compare is also about how productive I am with a software. It is not just 500$ i spend once but on day to day how much time i save.

Office 2007 has made me way more productive specially word 2007 and outlook.

So no i don't think OO has a better dollar value. OO is just cheap initially. In long term usuage MS Office will save you more money in your business (or work).

Ofcourse if you earn 10$ an hour then probably OO is right for you.
