E16 version 0.16.8.7 and epplets version 0.10 are now available for
download. "Add option to show windows on all desks in focus list. The CM now renders to the composite overlay window. Fix various updates when external background changes." Many more fixes are in the changelog.

Agreed in fact and spirit. I think there are lessons to be learned here. Rasterman's technical skills and insights are nearly beyond reproach, but his leadership skills and understanding of the community have doomed his best efforts to push the envelope for X11 desktops. Nothing about E is boring, but everything about it is niche, and nothing about it translates into mainstream progress.
