I've been using the ubuntuforums patch for a while now.
I'm not talking about copying Apple here, as of course WindowMaker, NEXTSTeP, etc all had docks before OS X.
Things look *so* much better with a global menubar, windows less cluttered; in terms of usability, Fitt's law is put to use, and finally the two-panel split that GNOME has actually makes sense, and you can make use of a lot of that empty space at the top (or where-ever you so choose to put the Mac Menu applet).
In short, I would be thrilled to see it in GNOME as an option and have commented as such on the bugzilla bug previously (not spam, of course).
BTW don't kill me, but I would like to see the taskbar go away too...too 80s for me
Some problems with this patch: same with KDE's-- you can't make it transparent or semi-transparent with the panel bar color, since it seems to just take the app's menu instead of *really* integrating it into the panel.
