Most software released under the GPL aren't GNU projects."
GPL is short for "GNU General Public License"
reference http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html.
The license you can argue has been chosen for Linus' tit-for-tat or Dicks four freedoms but its definitely a GNU License.

Its not its under the X11 License or MIT License

Yes but oddly they all use the GNU License.
